- Tony Burke Looks Forward to the Next 60 Years of Pinkard
Tony Burke Looks Forward to the Next 60 Years of Pinkard 2023-03-29 Share Share Pinkard turns 61 Today! At the beginning of the year, Jim Pinkard looked at the history of the company . Now, Tony looks to the future. As of March 30th, Pinkard Construction enters its 61st year serving Colorado senior living, affordable housing, multi-family, recreation, municipal, and commercial clients. Pinkard's President, Tony Burke, thought it was time to look at our future. Burke says the company’s leadership is armed with the wisdom and perspective gained by adapting and growing with this always-evolving construction and development market. “We march forward with a new generation of ownership, new leaders, and new branding,” says Burke. “These decisive changes represent a continuation of fundamental business practices but with a fresh new look and approach to the challenges and opportunities presented in the world of construction today.” Burke says that his leadership team recognizes the importance of changing stereotypes of who can participate in the construction industry. His view is that greater workforce diversity enhances the companies' ability to be creative and competitive and the industry needs to attract the workforce of tomorrow. Burke knows that the need for construction professionals is at an all-time high. A key priority for Burke is investing in Pinkard employees' ongoing development and creating an environment that retains talent. He feels that a company culture with opportunities for growth, stability, and work/life balance will also pay dividends in recruitment. “We aim to create an environment of belonging in our office and jobsites. This industry is a great place to make a living and should be inclusive and representative of our community,” explains Burke. “We strive daily to perform with our core values in mind, knowing that these qualities are the foundations of transparency and tenacity.” Burke also recognizes that mental health is an ongoing challenge within society, specifically in the construction industry. He says Pinkard will continue to expand employee benefits, build cultural supports, and engage with the entire construction industry to ensure a resilient Colorado workforce. “Pinkard's people are its greatest asset,” says Burke. “I feel a responsibility to ensure that our employees have mental health and counseling options as part of their benefits, are using technology that makes their jobs easier, and feel that they have the support from within the company to not only perform but thrive at Pinkard” Burke feels that this emphasis on the health and stability of Pinkard's workforce is the right thing to do, but also allows Pinkard to offer an unparalleled client experience. His teams have the capacity to be collaborative, provide good stewardship to their clients, produce exceptional quality, and add overall financial value to their projects. “Offering our employees the best tools possible not only helps them but offers our clients a greater degree of collaboration, clarity, and control over their project,” says Burke. “We want to provide our clients with a superior construction experience, in addition to the best value” Burke is optimistic when he thinks about the next 60 years of Pinkard. He says he feels that “Going into our 61st year, we are eager to share our excitement and enthusiasm with our friends, clients, and peers. We are thankful to be solidly rooted in the Colorado community and for the expertise of our creative and professional staff. Together we will build great teams, offer great solutions, and provide great value for all our current and future clients.” Learn More Anthony Burke, LEED AP, President Connect Our Projects Learn More Share This Story Share Share More News Sort By Topic Reset Men’s Mental Health Month: “We Must Keep Talking About It” 2024-06-28 Learn More Men’s Mental Health Month: “I don’t have the answers, but I can listen” 2024-06-14 Learn More Men’s Mental Health Month: “We have to create a community” 2024-06-21 Learn More Pink Crew Breaks Personal Best While Building Beds for Kids 2024-06-12 Learn More Load More Our Approach Partner, Plan, BUILD. Pinkard Builds Projects Contact Us More Colorado Wood Framing Specialists Pinkard Frameworks aims to modernize the wood framing industry by offering detailed project assessments, identifying value-adds, and ensuring on-site supervision of the wood framing process. Our team takes ownership of the wood frame scope through collaboration with contractors, architects, engineers, suppliers, and subcontractors. This holistic approach ensures critical elements work with all trades that rely on structural framing, saving time and money. Learn More Why Pinkard Frameworks? The Problem There is no incentive for subcontractors to take ownership of the wood framing process. This causes schedule and quality issues that affect other trades. Our Solution Pinkard Frameworks provides preliminary truss design, in-house estimating, and shop drawing reviews to prevent conflicts and cascading issues that stop construction progress for redesigns. On-Site Supervision Our on-site framing superintendent is briefed throughout the design process and is a trained, experienced carpenter who manages all material and labor to the contract intent. - Pinkard Overcomes Market Challenges to Break Ground on Over 700 Units of Multi-Family in 2023
Pinkard Overcomes Market Challenges to Break Ground on Over 700 Units of Multi-Family in 2023 2024-01-31 Share Share Denver has been experiencing a boom in the construction industry in recent years, particularly in the multi-family sector. As a result, Denver and surrounding cities’ building departments have been overwhelmed by the volume of permit applications and inspections, causing delays and backlogs. In addition, the market is still feeling the effects of an unprecedented pandemic that disrupted global supply chains and caused shortages of essential materials such as lumber, steel, and concrete, leading to inflation and cost escalation. Despite these challenges, Pinkard has managed to navigate the complex and competitive Denver market and deliver successful multi-family projects. According to Leighton Neff, Chief Preconstruction Manager at Pinkard Construction, "When our client's project slips, it costs both of us money, so it is extremely important that we collaborate with the client and architect to make sure we expertly navigate the permitting process." One of the company's strategies to overcome the challenges is to leverage its experience, expertise, and relationships with clients, design partners, subcontractors, and suppliers. Pinkard Construction has also been using technology such as cloud-based software to streamline its processes and communication. In addition, the company has been implementing lean construction principles, including prefabrication, modularization, and just-in-time delivery, to optimize resources and minimize waste. The results speak for themselves. In the first six months of 2023, Pinkard broke ground on four complex multi-family projects in just six months, poised to deliver over 700 new units of market rate and affordable housing. These projects are the Krisana Apartments, a 151-unit affordable housing project in southeast Denver; the Akin Golden Triangle, a 12-story, 98-unit building in downtown Denver; the Akin Tennyson, an 83-unit luxury apartment project in northwest Denver; and the Willoughby Corner, a 400-unit affordable housing project in Lafayette near Boulder (Pinkard is currently working on phase one, 192 Units). These projects demonstrate Pinkard's commitment to building quality and sustainable communities while overcoming the challenges of building in Colorado. Tony Burke, president of Pinkard Construction, said, "Denver and the surrounding areas are vibrant and dynamic, offering many opportunities for growth and development. With the recent escalation in the housing market, more inventory is desperately needed if we are to continue to grow and attract great talent to our area. We are excited to be part of this transformation and contribute to Colorado’s prosperity." Pinkard Construction's ability to navigate the permitting process, overcome material shortages, and implement innovative construction practices has allowed it to deliver successful multi-family projects in Denver. The company's commitment to collaboration, technology, and sustainability bodes well for its future in the Denver market and beyond. - How to Avoid the Key Pitfalls in Multifamily Wood Framing
How to Avoid the Key Pitfalls in Multifamily Wood Framing 2024-01-10 Share Share Wood framing is a critical multifamily construction scope requiring attention and expertise. However, it can also be risky, causing quality issues and schedule delays if not appropriately managed. This is why Pinkard Construction has launched a new framing division, Pinkard Frameworks , to address these challenges. Recently, Pinkard President Tony Burke and Pinkard Frameworks Manager Dan Harris sat down to discuss the problem with wood framing and the solutions Pinkard can offer. In this division, professionals with in-depth framing knowledge work closely with the design team and key suppliers to ensure framing designs meet architectural and structural intent, constructability, and seamless integration with other trades. Pinkard Frameworks has dedicated framing professionals who can lead subcontractors and interface with the project superintendent to catch minor issues before they become significant problems. Ultimately, taking ownership and responsibility for the wood framing process is the key to success in commercial multifamily construction. Q: Wood framing is said to be one of the riskiest scopes in commercial construction. What makes it so risky? Tony Burke: Wood framing is a unique process that requires a lot of attention and expertise. If not managed properly, it can cause problems that cascade into other trades, leading to quality issues and schedule delays. This is what makes our new framing division so important; our clients, developer partners, design professionals and fellow general contractors can benefit from partnering with such a dedicated and specialized team. Dan Harris: Another potential issue is that very few wood framing subcontractors can be bonded. This is proof that the process is risky and requires someone to take ownership. That is why I am so happy to be a part of this new division, Pinkard Frameworks. Q: What is the solution to these problems? Tony Burke: The solution is to take ownership of the wood framing process. This means involving a general contractor with in-depth framing knowledge and their key suppliers, especially truss fabricators, with the design team. This collaboration results in framing designs that meet architectural and structural intent, ensure constructability, and seamless integration with other trades. Dan Harris: A critical aspect of this is cultivating relationships with vendors and holding them to project specifications. This approach ensures quality and saves owners money. Q: Can you give an example of how this approach has worked in the past? Tony Burke: Pinkard’s recent efforts on Krisana Affordable Housing created a framing design that saved the owner over $250,000. Dan Harris: Another example is Pinkard’s recent preconstruction efforts for Boulder County Housing Authority’s project, Willoughby Corner. The initial design was a unique, modern design that required complex engineering. We took the time to work with the design team to understand the factors driving the design decisions. We developed more economical solutions without sacrificing the overall look of the building. Q: What role does on-site supervision play in ensuring successful wood framing? Dan Harris: Experienced and attentive on-site supervision is crucial. A dedicated framing professional who leads the Framing Subcontractor and interfaces directly with the project superintendent can catch minor issues before they become major problems. This level of supervision ensures the project stays on track and all team members are held accountable for their work. Tony Burke: On-site framing supervisors must have the knowledge and authority to make quick decisions and adjustments, saving time and money. Q: In summary, what is the key to success in wood framing? Tony Burke: Having a team who not only understands the wood framing process start to finish but also takes ownership and responsibility for its success is essential for ensuring that your wood frame project is delivered smoothly on schedule, competitively priced and is a quality build that will last you decades. Q: Finally, can you tell us more about Pinkard Frameworks? Tony Burke: It’s a wood framing division of Pinkard Construction that will serve as a trade partner to developers and general contractors along the Colorado front range. We are thrilled to have Dan as our new Wood Frame Manager. His 40 years of experience have really let this division hit the ground running. Dan Harris: We will continue to self-perform wood framing for Pinkard projects, but other projects will be supported by Pinkard’s Self-Performance Department, including our team of superintendents, carpenters and foremen. - Pinkard Construction Awarded Bay Aquatic Park Renovation
Pinkard Construction Awarded Bay Aquatic Park Renovation 2024-04-30 Share Share Pinkard Construction has been awarded the renovation project for the Bay Aquatic Park Phase IV in Broomfield. Project cost is estimated at $9 million and will include the removal and replacement of the primary leisure pool, family slide, body slides, and slide plunge pool, along with the addition of deck space, shade structures, and a new mechanical building. Pinkard was the general contractor for the original aquatic park when it was first built in 1991. Additionally, it was the first community water park in the Denver metro area, and due to age, condition, and updated health and building codes, the facility needs renovation. In 2022, BHA Design, Inc. and their team, including Counsilman-Hunsaker, were selected to design the project. Schematic design drawings were submitted in September 2022, and the project paused while additional funding was secured. Currently, the design is progressing toward the delivery of final construction drawings. "We are thrilled to have been awarded this project," said Tony Burke, president of Pinkard Construction. "We have a long history of successful pool construction projects in Colorado, and we are excited to bring our expertise to the renovation of Broomfield Bay Aquatic Park. Our team is ready to work closely with BHA Design, Inc. and the City and County of Broomfield to deliver a high-quality project that will benefit the community for years to come. It’s very rewarding to be able to come back over thirty years later and work once again on a project that the community has enjoyed so much. Many of our current employees remember coming here as kids." “Pinkard Construction has been invaluable during the preconstruction phase by helping to ensure constructability and that cost-saving measures are captured in the final design,” said Brian Graham, capital improvement program manager for Broomfield. Design work is anticipated to be completed in Spring 2024. The intent is to close The Bay Aquatic Park for construction in August 2024, with the objective to reopen the Bay Aquatic Park in July 2025, to ensure a partial Summer 2025 season at The Bay. - Pinkard Works to Remove Barriers for Women in Construction
Pinkard Works to Remove Barriers for Women in Construction 2023-03-06 Share Share Pinkard is proud to be a part of Women in Construction Week 2023. Pinkard understands that women have faced obstacles in the construction industry and is committed to helping them achieve their career aspirations in this field. Pinkard is focused on providing women with access to educational resources, flexibility, and mentorship opportunities. And this is not just for its employees but clients as well. "I think it is really about flexibility," says Christina Call, Prequalification Coordinator. "One of the barriers I see for women is that we also take on a lot of the responsibility to raise our kids and keep our family life going." Call says that she feels Pinkard's leadership allows her the flexibility to balance supporting Pinkard and her family. She thinks that a rigid 9-5 schedule isn't realistic, especially given the new status quo of remote work. "I set an in-office schedule that I stick to, but the ability to remote work has made it possible for me to pursue a career in construction," says Call. For project engineer Dallas Frisbie, her work in the field is all about showing up and getting the job done. She says that Pinkard's leadership is doing the heavy lifting to ensure that traditionally all-male environments are open and welcoming. "I have experienced my fair share of uncomfortable experiences in my career. However, Pinkard's team works hard to make sure anyone feels comfortable," says Frisbie. "At the end of the day, I don't want to be the one policing everyone. Pinkard has already set the standard for appropriate behavior." Frisbie says that women must also have access to mentorship to learn and grow. She says her experience at Pinkard has been tremendous and is eager to offer mentorship. "When I was studying at the School of Mines, there wasn't a lot of other women pursuing this career with me," she said. "At Pinkard, I am so excited to have access to not just other Superintendents and project managers who are open and collaborative but also to Odette Bent-Buckles, our CFO." Frisbie says that as she grows in this field, her priority is to continue to mentor other women who want to break into construction, especially in the field. "The biggest misconception about this industry is that field jobs are not for women. I want to work to change that stereotype," she says. "Pinkard has proven to be the perfect place for that because this desire to change and grow is cultural. They make everyone feel like they belong." Pinkard’s focus is on more than just its employees and includes the client experience for its growing number of female clients in development and facilities roles. Molly Chiang, a senior housing developer with Boulder County Housing Authority (BCHA), says that her experience with Pinkard differs significantly from others in her career. "Pinkard's team has always been extremely respectful, and I don't know, just treats us like peers and colleagues," says Chiang. "I have been in rooms where that is not the case." "Walking onto a construction site as a woman, if I was like, 'I don't know what a glu-lam is,' I never felt stupid asking questions," said Lauren Cely, Senior Housing Developer for BCHA. "I remember standing in the garage shell, talking with your team about what's better: cast in place or precast, and we were going through the pros and cons, thinking about future projects, and I loved it." Pinkard's commitment to helping women succeed in this field is evident in our ongoing efforts to provide women with the tools and resources they need to pursue a successful and fulfilling career in construction. Pinkard is thrilled to be celebrating Women in Construction Week and is excited to see the positive impact these initiatives have on the lives and careers of women in the industry. - Arista Place 8181 | Pinkard Construction | Colorado
Arista Place 8181 Broomfield, CO, USA Arista Place II, LLC 87,300 Sq. Ft. Office, Structural Steel Superstructure The Arista Place 8181 project is a ground-up five-story office building adjacent to its sister property 8001 Arista Place office building (another Pinkard project) near the Broomfield Event Center. When Pinkard’s on-site quality control personnel identified issues with steel fabrication that could significantly delay the job, our project team convened the steel erector and fabrication team to analyze possible fixes. According to the client, “Pinkard and the team came up with what was actually a pretty simple plan – they did a really good job digging in and finding the easiest and best solution – it was executed flawlessly.” Because this project was constructed during a particularly difficult time in the Colorado labor market, Arista Place LLC had serious concerns that the project would suffer delays due to subcontractor failures and no-shows. “Pinkard’s subcontractor relationships have had a lot to do with this not happening. they are loyal to Pinkard because Pinkard treats them well; along with Pinkard’s subcontractor vetting process, which I think is pretty strict. Another reason why it was a good choice to go with Pinkard. We could easily have gone with somebody cheaper, then have some labor issues, drag out the time frame and cost us more money in the end. It’s hard to quantify the value in that.”* Pinkard’s waterproofing and quality assurance approach ensured watertight seals on Arista’s many windows and storefront framing. Multiple individuals signed-off on every single window opening, which included photographs of every window, its framing, and the waterproofing process. While this was technically a ground-up project, Pinkard was obligated to accommodate the needs of some existing tenants who were concerned that construction activities would hamper walk-in business. Pinkard met regularly with these tenants to listen to and respond to their concerns, which included erecting “open for business” pedestrian routing signs. Arista Place LLC commented that Pinkard treated existing tenants as if they were Pinkard clients. "One of the things I really liked was your QA process in which multiple individuals sign-off on every single window opening, its framing and waterproofing. With my manufacturing background, it resonated with me that someone in the construction industry would incorporate that kind of a quality check. I’m seeing evidence of this attention to quality all over the project. It tends to permeate throughout the job." Office Client "Subcontractors are loyal to Pinkard because Pinkard treats them well; along with Pinkard’s subcontractor vetting process, which I think is pretty strict. We could easily have gone with somebody cheaper, then have some labor issues, drag out the time frame, and cost us more money in the end. It’s hard to quantify the value in that." Office Client "Everyone (at Pinkard) from top to bottom has been great about providing us info when we need it. That’s key for us building a spec building in this market; to have timely info to make timely decisions is a big thing."
