  • Pinkard Announces New Chief Operating Officer and Construction Manager

Pinkard Announces New Chief Operating Officer and Construction Manager 2022-09-23 Share Share Pinkard Construction has announced the promotion of two key employees. Blake Chambliss, a 38-year veteran of the company, has been promoted to Chief Operating Officer and will be providing leadership for all facets of Pinkard's current and future construction projects. He will continue to lead Pinkard’s Self-Performance Group as a subset of Operations. In addition, Pinkard announced that Joe Revielle will be promoted to Construction Manager, reporting to Chambliss, and offering direct supervision of all construction projects assigned to him. Tony Burke, Pinkard President, said that these leadership changes will improve Pinkard's reporting structure to create better support and accountability for our projects and team members, ultimately benefitting clients. “Blake is amazingly resilient and resourceful and has leveraged those qualities to tackle and excel in every job and challenge that has come his way,” said Burke. “Joe’s experience and his exceptional attention to detail has quickly made him one of Pinkard’s most sought-after superintendents. He will carry this wealth of knowledge to his new role and be able to mentor our up-and-coming stars.” Chambliss says he is excited to be transitioning into a role where he can support project teams removing roadblocks and ensuring that staffing is adequate. “Due to all the new work we have acquired, my priority is filling all of our vacant operations positions, including many assistant superintendent roles,” says Chambliss. “It is important to me that our teams not only have the leadership support I can provide but also the boots on the ground to make sure teams continue to provide exceptional client service and construction quality.” Blake’s list of successful projects spans many project types. He has worked on recreation centers, multi-family, senior housing, municipal, healthcare, and Class A office buildings. He holds a National Standard General Building Contractor (A) license, and four of his projects have been awarded ABC’s first-place National Excellence in Construction award. “Business is booming, and I am excited to help Pinkard make sure that all of the sizable upcoming projects are set up for success before we even start moving dirt,” says Revielle. Joe Revielle has been in the construction industry for 38 years and has excelled in a diverse mix of project types, including multifamily housing, retail, and municipal ranging from $1 to over $90 million. He is a LEED accredited professional in Building Design + Construction and has developed his listening and collaborative skills partly through his extensive municipal experience as a planning commissioner. He has been with Pinkard 5 years. • Project Rewind: Keeping Costs Down So Astroscale Can Zap Space Trash in Style

A complicated renovation. A challenge to keep costs low. A beautiful outcome. Project Rewind: Keeping Costs Down So Astroscale Can Zap Space Trash in Style 2024-06-06 Share Share There’s a lot of talk about creating a more sustainable future here on this planet, but less about doing so beyond the earth’s inner atmosphere. Enter Astroscale, which since 2013 has been working to advance safe and sustainable growth in outer space by extending the life of orbiting satellites and clearing the skies of hazardous space debris. Founded and headquartered in Japan, Astroscale chose Denver for its U.S. headquarters. Located in South Denver, off Broadway and Evans, the company found its new office in the form of a 100-year-old building—once home to a metal foundry—featuring heavy timbers, a brick envelope, huge windows, glass block, and open spaces. The design intent of the 13,500 square foot renovation was to complement the existing structure and its history with an innovative office space inspired by traditional Japanese design and the science fiction of Star Wars and Star Trek . After coming in second in the bidding stage, Pinkard was hired by Astroscale in the Spring of 2022 to save the renovation when the originally-hired contractor fell drastically behind in preconstruction. To quickly get up to speed, Pinkard worked closely and diligently with Astroscale and NeoEra Architecture to analyze the previous contractor’s preconstruction efforts and provide effective value engineering to get the design into budget. “Pinkard spent a lot of time in preconstruction trying to match program and budget and still have reputable, ethical, trustworthy subcontractors,” says Astroscale senior vice president Becky Yoder. “I cannot say enough good things about the Pinkard team, how well they work together, and how transparent they were.” One of Pinkard’s key goals was through design optimization and executing the project in a way that kept costs under a critical threshold, preventing Astroscale from having to conduct hundreds of thousands of extra flood gate work that would have been required by the city if the remodel exceeded the value of the building. Of course, none of Pinkard’s savvy budgeting meant compromising on quality. “There were things that Pinkard wouldn't accept from the mill worker, so they had to go back and refabricate,” remembers NeoEra principal architect Emily Adams. “These weren't always the fastest solutions, but they were definitely the best solutions. I really appreciated that.” As to whether those cost-saving measures came at the expense of the interior’s stunning, sci-fi-inspired design, the pictures speak for themselves. “We came in on time and on budget,” says Becky Yoder. “This is my third building to finish out in the aerospace industry, and this was by far the best experience I've had. And considering the challenges with this old building, I would highly recommend Pinkard.” Learn More Adaptive Reuse Construction Learn More Office Renovations and New Construction See Projects Renovations and Additions See Projects Share This Story Share Share More News Sort By Topic Reset Pinkard Construction Welcomes Mike Hager as Senior Project Manager 2025-02-11 Learn More Pinkard Selected to Renovate Historic Machebeuf Hall at Loretto Heights Campus 2025-01-17 Learn More Pinkard Frameworks Promotes Russell Hardcastle 2025-01-29 Learn More Pinkard Breaks Ground on Phase III of The Edge 2024-12-19 Learn More Load More Our Approach Partner, Plan, BUILD. • Pinkard Breaks Ground on Phase III of The Edge

The final installment of the 10-year project brings the campus to 205 affordable housing units. Pinkard Breaks Ground on Phase III of The Edge 2024-12-19 Share Share Last week, on a sunny December morning, developers, residents and members of the community broke ground on the capstone phase of The Edge affordable apartments community in Loveland. Held on site, the ceremony included remarks from project and funding partners, as well as Loveland Mayor Pro-Tem Jon Mallo. The Edge Phase III is the third and final chapter in the Edge Apartments story, once again uniting the owner-architect-contractor partnership of Loveland Housing Authority (LHA), OZ Architecture and Pinkard Construction. Expected to be completed in early 2026, the 52,170 square foot expansion will add three new 3-story buildings containing 66 new units, complementing the 139 apartments constructed in the previous two phases and bringing the total development to 205 units. Featuring a mix of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments, the new units will serve households with incomes from 30% to 60% of the area median income. “There are a lot of special things about this campus, from creating permanent supportive housing for formerly homeless veterans in Phase I, to adding studio units to Phase II that allowed us to house young adults coming out of foster care,” said Jeff Feneis, Executive Directors of the Loveland Housing Authority. “We're really excited to get the team back together, with Pinkard Construction and OZ Architecture, and to complete construction of The Edge campus with these last 66 units.” Pinkard President Tony Burke echoed those sentiments: “More than a decade after we started planning on Phase I, we are delighted to once again return to The Edge and finish what we started with two of our strongest longtime partners: Loveland Housing Authority and OZ Architecture.” Completed in 2016, Phase I of The Edge consisted of an 82,000-sf ground-up facility with 70-units of affordable housing for working families and survivors of the 2012 High Park Fire and September 2013 floods, plus permanent supportive housing for homeless veterans. Completed in 2021, the 80,000-sf Phase II added another 69 affordable units for working families. The campus also contains a clubhouse, urban gardens, tot lot, walking trails, and open space, with immediate access to the neighboring business park, retail, and professional services. All three phases are designed and constructed to meet Enterprise Green Communities Criteria. Project financing includes Low Income Housing Tax Credits and municipal and private funding from sources that include Wells Fargo, Colorado Housing and Finance Authority (CHFA), Colorado Division of Housing (CDOH), and Loveland Housing Development Corporation (LHDC). As the demand for new affordable housing in Loveland continues to grow, LHA is excited to add these 66 new units to our community’s affordable housing inventory when Phase III is completed. • The Problem with Wood Framing and How to Solve It

The problem is simple, if not easy, to fix: someone must take ownership of the wood framing process.   The Problem with Wood Framing and How to Solve It 2023-12-20 Share Share This article originally appeared in the December 2023 Issue of Building Dialogue Wood framing is one of the riskiest scopes in construction. The fact that remarkably few wood framing Subcontractors can be bonded is proof of this. Even if they could, the problems that can result from poorly managed framing - including schedule and quality issues that cascade into other trades – can't really be fixed with a bonding Band-Aid. The good news is that the problem is simple, if not easy, to fix: someone must take ownership of the wood framing process. Many entities have a piece of the puzzle, leading to this lack of ownership. One glaring example is truss design. Structural Engineers (who do not have truss software) rely on general design principles to complete framing plans. Truss company's bids are based on these plans and will bid them as drawn, right or wrong. They have no incentive other than winning the job. In addition, these companies generally do not evaluate the project holistically: meeting architectural intent with MEP, structural steel integration, etc. Eventually, problematic designs are passed to the Framing Subcontractor, whose only incentive is to finish fast and collect a check. When problems are caught, redesign can take weeks. This puts the whole project on hold if it’s early enough and leads to costly rework and associated delays if construction is underway. To address these issues, a thorough preconstruction process is crucial. The first key to success is involving a General Contractor with in-depth framing knowledge and their key suppliers, especially truss fabricators, with the design team. This collaboration results in framing designs that meet architectural and structural intent, ensure constructability and seamless integration with other trades. The result is a project that can be built in budget, faster, and with simplicity that improves quality before construction starts. A critical aspect of this is cultivating relationships with vendors and holding them to project specifications. This approach ensures quality and saves owners money – and not in a nebulous “preventing future issues” way. There are myriad efficiencies that can be built into the project at this stage. Pinkard’s recent efforts on Krisana Affordable Housing created a framing design that saved the Owner over $250,000. Once the project is set up for success, experienced and attentive on-site supervision is crucial. A dedicated framing professional who leads the Framing Subcontractor and interfaces directly with the project superintendent can catch minor issues before they become major problems. This level of supervision ensures the project stays on track and all team members are held accountable for their work. Additionally, it allows for open communication between all parties involved and leads to a smoother and more efficient construction process. On-site framing supervisors must have the knowledge and authority to make quick decisions and adjustments, saving time and money. Properly implemented, these strategies can be incredibly successful. Pinkard’s recent preconstruction efforts for Boulder County Housing Authority on Willoughby Corner – a multi-phased affordable community in Lafayette with 174 units in the first phase – illustrates this well. The initial design was a unique, modern design that required complex engineering. When Pinkard took the time and worked with the design team to understand the factors driving the design decisions, we developed solutions without sacrificing the overall look of the building. Having a team who not only understands the wood framing process start to finish but also takes ownership and responsibility for its success is essential for ensuring that your wood frame project is delivered smoothly on schedule, competitively priced and is a quality build that will last you decades. In recent years, Pinkard has made mental health a core tenant of how we address employee wellness and job safety. In addition to various mental health resources provided through Cigna Behavioral Health , our employee benefits include 5 free counseling sessions through Magellan EAP and a virtual support program for dealing with stress and substance issues via Youturn Health . Our weekly on-site safety talks include ongoing conversations on mental health topics. And in every single porta-john on Pinkard jobsites, we place a sticker with the words “YOU MATTER” in English and Spanish, plus a QR code leading to the “988” national Crisis Lifeline. We also hold an annual employee cornhole tournament supporting mental health. As a sign of progress, Pinkard was recently certified as a “Blue Badge” Healthy Workplace by Health Links , earning the highest mental health resources score of any contractor in Colorado, but that doesn't mean our work is anywhere near done. As we've learned, one of the biggest challenges is the stigma around discussing mental health, so it's on all of us to break that stigma down and make it okay to ask for help, which we all need at various points in our lives. Pinkard is focused on providing women with access to educational resources, flexibility, and mentorship opportunities. And this is not just for its employees but clients as well. "I think it is really about flexibility," says Christina Call, Prequalification Coordinator. "One of the barriers I see for women is that we also take on a lot of the responsibility to raise our kids and keep our family life going." Call says that she feels Pinkard's leadership allows her the flexibility to balance supporting Pinkard and her family. She thinks that a rigid 9-5 schedule isn't realistic, especially given the new status quo of remote work. "I set an in-office schedule that I stick to, but the ability to remote work has made it possible for me to pursue a career in construction," says Call. For project engineer Dallas Frisbie, her work in the field is all about showing up and getting the job done. She says that Pinkard's leadership is doing the heavy lifting to ensure that traditionally all-male environments are open and welcoming. "I have experienced my fair share of uncomfortable experiences in my career. However, Pinkard's team works hard to make sure anyone feels comfortable," says Frisbie. "At the end of the day, I don't want to be the one policing everyone. Pinkard has already set the standard for appropriate behavior." Frisbie says that women must also have access to mentorship to learn and grow. She says her experience at Pinkard has been tremendous and is eager to offer mentorship. "When I was studying at the School of Mines, there wasn't a lot of other women pursuing this career with me," she said. "At Pinkard, I am so excited to have access to not just other Superintendents and project managers who are open and collaborative but also to Odette Bent-Buckles, our CFO." Frisbie says that as she grows in this field, her priority is to continue to mentor other women who want to break into construction, especially in the field. "The biggest misconception about this industry is that field jobs are not for women. I want to work to change that stereotype," she says. "Pinkard has proven to be the perfect place for that because this desire to change and grow is cultural. They make everyone feel like they belong." Pinkard’s focus is on more than just its employees and includes the client experience for its growing number of female clients in development and facilities roles. Molly Chiang, a senior housing developer with Boulder County Housing Authority (BCHA), says that her experience with Pinkard differs significantly from others in her career. "Pinkard's team has always been extremely respectful, and I don't know, just treats us like peers and colleagues," says Chiang. "I have been in rooms where that is not the case." "Walking onto a construction site as a woman, if I was like, 'I don't know what a glu-lam is,' I never felt stupid asking questions," said Lauren Cely, Senior Housing Developer for BCHA. "I remember standing in the garage shell, talking with your team about what's better: cast in place or precast, and we were going through the pros and cons, thinking about future projects, and I loved it." Pinkard's commitment to helping women succeed in this field is evident in our ongoing efforts to provide women with the tools and resources they need to pursue a successful and fulfilling career in construction. Pinkard is thrilled to be celebrating Women in Construction Week and is excited to see the positive impact these initiatives have on the lives and careers of women in the industry.
