Pinkard understands that women have faced obstacles in the construction industry and is committed to helping them achieve their career aspirations in this field. Pinkard is focused on providing women with access to educational resources, flexibility, and mentorship opportunities. And this is not just for its employees but clients as well. "I think it is really about flexibility," says Christina Call, Prequalification Coordinator. "One of the barriers I see for women is that we also take on a lot of the responsibility to raise our kids and keep our family life going." Call says that she feels Pinkard's leadership allows her the flexibility to balance supporting Pinkard and her family. She thinks that a rigid 9-5 schedule isn't realistic, especially given the new status quo of remote work. "I set an in-office schedule that I stick to, but the ability to remote work has made it possible for me to pursue a career in construction," says Call. For project engineer Dallas Frisbie, her work in the field is all about showing up and getting the job done. She says that Pinkard's leadership is doing the heavy lifting to ensure that traditionally all-male environments are open and welcoming. "I have experienced my fair share of uncomfortable experiences in my career. However, Pinkard's team works hard to make sure anyone feels comfortable," says Frisbie. "At the end of the day, I don't want to be the one policing everyone. Pinkard has already set the standard for appropriate behavior." Frisbie says that women must also have access to mentorship to learn and grow. She says her experience at Pinkard has been tremendous and is eager to offer mentorship. "When I was studying at the School of Mines, there wasn't a lot of other women pursuing this career with me," she said. "At Pinkard, I am so excited to have access to not just other Superintendents and project managers who are open and collaborative but also to Odette Bent-Buckles, our CFO." Frisbie says that as she grows in this field, her priority is to continue to mentor other women who want to break into construction, especially in the field. "The biggest misconception about this industry is that field jobs are not for women. I want to work to change that stereotype," she says. "Pinkard has proven to be the perfect place for that because this desire to change and grow is cultural. They make everyone feel like they belong." Pinkard’s focus is on more than just its employees and includes the client experience for its growing number of female clients in development and facilities roles. Molly Chiang, a senior housing developer with Boulder County Housing Authority (BCHA), says that her experience with Pinkard differs significantly from others in her career. "Pinkard's team has always been extremely respectful, and I don't know, just treats us like peers and colleagues," says Chiang. "I have been in rooms where that is not the case." "Walking onto a construction site as a woman, if I was like, 'I don't know what a glu-lam is,' I never felt stupid asking questions," said Lauren Cely, Senior Housing Developer for BCHA. "I remember standing in the garage shell, talking with your team about what's better: cast in place or precast, and we were going through the pros and cons, thinking about future projects, and I loved it." Pinkard's commitment to helping women succeed in this field is evident in our ongoing efforts to provide women with the tools and resources they need to pursue a successful and fulfilling career in construction. Pinkard Starts Thrive with 0% Budget Variance Pinkard Starts Thrive with 0% Budget Variance January 28, 2021 Share Share Pinkard Construction and Shopworks Architecture have completed preconstruction services on Denver Housing Authority’s (DHA) $42 million Thrive affordable housing complex. “Working with the precon team at Pinkard was a great experience – their knowledge and approach made for a truly collaborative process that helped add real value to the project,” said Kyle Mead, Project Manager at Shopworks Architecture. Working closely with the design team, Pinkard helped guide the budget to a 0% variance between design development documents and the GMP. With this phase complete, it is expected that construction will begin in late February. “With this zero percent variance, DHA was able to incorporate add-alternates to enhance Thrive’s value to future tenants and DHA,” said Leighton Neff, Senior Preconstruction Manager for Pinkard. “During preconstruction, Pinkard collaborated closely with DHA, the Shopworks team and our chosen MEP/fire and earthworks design-assist partners to refine the scope and pricing from the design development phase through GMP.” A part of DHA’s Sun Valley redevelopment plan, Thrive will be a ground-up, 7-story, mixed-income development with a mix of two-story townhomes and 1 – 5-bedroom multi-family units, totaling 135 units. Once this project is complete, it will mark Pinkard’s 101st multi-family project, with more than 50 of those being HUD-funded projects. Pinkard is an expert in affordable housing, providing preconstruction services and aiding in the funding acquisitions phase. Pink Crew Breaks Personal Best While Building Beds for Kids Pink Crew Breaks Personal Best While Building Beds for Kids June 12, 2024 Share Share When skills and purpose perfectly align, doing good can yield some pretty impressive results. Last Friday, as June temperatures began to climb into the 90s, scores of Pinkard people gathered under the large outdoor pavilion at the Westminster Elks Lodge, across the street from the Pinkard construction yard, to roll up their sleeves and build beds for kids in need. Organized by Pinkard’s community outreach program, The Pink Crew , the volunteer event benefited Sleep in Heavenly Peace , an award-winning nonprofit that delivers beds to children who don’t have one. As the tagline on their trailer reads: “No kid sleeps on the ground in our town!” Needless to say, our people’s considerable experience building things with power tools made for an overqualified workforce on a project that required various teams to cut, drill, sand, and assemble the bed frame components before dipping them in a sealant bath and branding the headboards with a hot iron. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-t1LLDFa1g “The goal was to build 60 beds, but they’re not used to having construction people as their volunteers,” says Pinkard accountant Kristen Rebmann, who co-leads the Pink Crew. “When they asked how many people knew how to use a saw and everybody’s hands went up, they decided to leave the excess lumber they had delivered and see how many extra beds we could build in the allotted time. Our people ended up using up every board supplied to build 71 beds in 5 hours.” In total, 40 Pinkard employees, along with a handful of friends and family members showed up—all wearing their bright pink T-shirts—smashing the previous record for turnout at a Pink Crew event. “It was so great to see everyone come together, utilizing their skills to serve the community,” says CFO Odette Bent-Buckles, who worked the dipping and drying station of the assembly line, adding how she was especially pleased to see many faces who hadn’t previously engaged in Pink Crew projects. In addition to organizing community service opportunities through the Pink Crew, Pinkard offers 16 annual hours of paid VTO, or Volunteer Time Off , to all employees interested in pursuing charity work. Next up, the Pink Crew will be helping our longtime partners at the Action Center with their annual school supply drive taking place in July. Men’s Mental Health Month: “We have to create a community” Men’s Mental Health Month: “We have to create a community” June 21, 2024 Share Share Earlier this month, Pinkard project estimator Bryce Heitsmith posted a long LinkedIn message that stood out among the usual professional posturing you see on the social media site. He wrote: “The older I get, the more I realize how my mental health affects my team, my clients, and most importantly my family. As I focus on my own mental health, I can’t help but notice how many other men relate but never talk. Some startling statistics will show this is a bigger problem than we all want to think it is.” The stats that Bryce listed: In 2021, the suicide rate among men was approximately four times higher than the rate among women. Men make up 50% of the population but nearly 80% of suicides. Nearly 1 in 10 men experience some form of depression or anxiety, but less than half seek treatment. More than 3 million men in the US suffer from a panic disorder, agoraphobia, or other phobia. 40% of men have never spoken to anyone about their mental health. The post ends with a plea: “Check in on your husbands, father, brothers, and sons. They fight a silent battle none of us may know about until it’s too late.” In our continuing series of Q&As observing Men’s Mental Health Month, we talk further with Bryce about his well-researched perspectives on this complex issue. How did you come to be outspoken on men’s mental health? Before working in construction, I was an EMT, so I come from a background where you deal with the effects of mental health problems—from mental breakdowns to suicide—on a daily basis. When you go out on those calls, it’s eye-opening to see just how many of them are not only men, but men who work in trades like ours. Why does the mental health of men deserve special attention? As a male, things like depression, anxiety, and panic disorders are often overlooked. There’s this mentality of “get back to work and don't worry about it,” but that can be a band-aid on a gaping wound. I think it's so important to make people aware of the struggles and the silent battles that men face but rarely get attention for. What about men’s mental health in construction? I believe Pinkard takes mental health seriously—and that's why I love Pinkard—but in the industry as a whole, it's pretty much: “Get your job done and go home.” And a lot of times “going home” means drinking, doing drugs, getting in fights with your wife or girlfriend... Our divorce rates are at 60-65% in construction. Men are taking their lives at drastically higher rates, and the construction industry has a higher suicide rate than society at large. Nobody talks about the silent battles these guys are going through, and I don't believe the industry does nearly enough to help these guys. What needs to change? A lot of times they're very worried about the pressures of a project and meeting deadlines, but deadlines don't get done if don’t show up to work the next day. Nobody wants to talk about how they are feeling because they’re afraid that if their boss gets wind of it, they're going to lose their job. So they can't talk about it, and that takes just as much of a mental toll on these guys as what’s bothering them in the first place. So part of it is removing that fear of losing your livelihood just because you're going through a tough time, and then getting the help you need. [At Pinkard] we're industry leaders in that, but it needs to be the standard to give these gentlemen time to get away from the project without the repercussions of a workplace. How else do we get men comfortable with the idea of talking about mental health? We have to break down the stigma of actually contacting mental health resources. We can put a resource in front of your face every day, but if you never contact that resource, it’s useless. Professional therapy has its place. My father is a therapist who helps his patients analyze their feelings and learn how to strategically attack the problem. But in reality, a lot of construction workers are never going to sit down in an office with some college educated therapist who can’t truly relate to their lives. So what’s the alternative? Don’t get me wrong. Therapy is cool and sometimes necessary, but in many cases, people just need someone to drink a beer and vent about their day with. We have to create a community of resources that don't feel like you're calling a therapist. You need that buddy you can call at 2:00 a.m. Loneliness is a killer, and that's often what it comes down to. The challenge is that these guys are working 10-hour, 12-hour, or 14-hour days. They don’t want to get off work and go vent to with their buddy about how they're feeling or how hard their day was, because they’re tired. All they want to do is go home and rest, but you have to make time for it. In our conversation with Safety Dave , he talked about the importance of making yourself vulnerable. What does that have to do with fostering this new sense of community? Part of it is creating an environment where you can be vulnerable and talk about your struggles without fearing somebody will use it against you. Men are expected to be the strong person in the situation. We have to break down the stigmas that prevent us from showing weakness. You can be a strong-minded person, a strong teammate, and a strong leader while also being vulnerable in certain areas. If we can dissolve that illusion, we can really start talking to each other. What is something that Pinkard is doing right? One thing that I really value is that Pinkard is careful not to understaff our projects. We all have big responsibilities and work hard, but we staff our projects very diligently so that one person isn’t going to be completely overwhelmed. A big part of that is giving people the ability to take time off and take care of themselves. Few companies offer the same benefits or PTO, and our leadership directly encourages us to use it. In my department [of Preconstruction], Leighton and Jesse directly tell us, “Hey, take your time off. Let's plan a month a month or two in advance to get you the two or three days off you need to recover.” That's a huge thing that they encourage you to take your vacation, and they create plans so that your job is covered while you’re gone. Not many places do that. What else would you love to see? Industry-wide, people and companies need to take the initiative to bring these guys together and create more community outside of work. That could mean weekly or monthly after-work meetups, or special events where they can bring their families. At the end of the day, we need to break down the barriers and create more connections and friendships so that nobody feels like they’re alone. Pinkard and Urban Land Conservancy Break Ground on 102 Affordable Apartments on West Colfax Pinkard and Urban Land Conservancy Break Ground on 102 Affordable Apartments on West Colfax May 31, 2024 Share Share This week, in a ceremony featuring remarks by Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, Pinkard Construction, a Lakewood-based general contractor, and Urban Land Conservancy , a Denver-based nonprofit real estate organization, broke ground on The Irving at Mile High Vista. Located at 3270 W. Colfax Ave, the new structure will add 102 affordable apartments (studios and one-, two- and three-bedrooms) to the West Colfax neighborhood, serving households making 20-80% of the area median income (AMI). With funding from the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority (CHFA), RBC, the State of Colorado, and the City and County of Denver, among others, it is one of the first developments to use Prop 123 affordable-housing financing approved by Colorado voters in 2022. “This is a combination between a partnership with the state leadership, with the city leadership, with CHFA, with our Prop 123 funds, and with amazing community partners like the Urban Land Conservancy,” Mayor Johnston said in his remarks, “all of whom have come together to make sure Denver remains a place where, yes, we can have one of the fastest growing economies in the country, but also a place where, when you drop your second grader off at school, and that second grade teacher picks her up in their arms, that teacher can still afford to live in this neighborhood.” The Irving will use renewable energy, and highly efficient heat pumps for heating and cooling, as well as a rooftop solar array — all to support a cleaner, more sustainable environment inside and out. The project is expected to meet or exceed National Green Building Standards (NGBS). Other climate-friendly features include energy-efficient appliances and lighting, low-flow plumbing fixtures, water-efficient landscaping and electric vehicle charging stations. In 2011, Urban Land Conservancy purchased the 2-acre site where the Denver Public Library’s Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzales Branch and Del Norte’s affordable Avondale Apartments are located today. The Irving is the third and final parcel at Mile High Vista to be developed. "The Irving is the culmination of the community’s long-term vision for Mile High Vista, a mixed-use development that offers affordable housing and library services," said Sarah Harman, senior vice president of real estate at ULC. “Because of the ongoing displacement of longtime residents in the West Colfax neighborhood, we believe it’s more important than ever to deliver affordable housing here.” The building was designed by Studio Completiva. With construction beginning now, Pinkard expects to complete the building by mid-2025. "We are thrilled to partner with ULC on this important project that will provide much-needed affordable housing for Denver residents," said Tony Burke, president of Pinkard Construction. Pinkard Awarded South Metro Fire Station Replacement, Starts Construction Pinkard Awarded South Metro Fire Station Replacement, Starts Construction October 12, 2023 Share Share Pinkard Construction has been awarded the South Metro Fire Rescue Authority's Fire Station 15 replacement construction project. The project will replace Station 15, which is located at 2702 E Dry Creek Road in Centennial. The proposed design is approximately 12,000 square feet with two stories consisting of three apparatus bays, six sleeping rooms, a day room, a kitchen, a dining room, offices, a fitness room, and support areas. "We are thrilled to have been selected for this important project," said Tony Burke, President of Pinkard Construction. "Our team has extensive experience in constructing public safety and municipal projects, and we are committed to providing the South Metro Fire Rescue Authority with a facility that helps them better serve the community." The construction began in September 2023 and is expected to conclude in the summer of 2024. The design was completed in January 2023 by OZ Architecture. The project will provide a state-of-the-art facility for the South Metro Fire Rescue Authority to better serve the community. Pinkard Construction has a long history of constructing municipal projects in Colorado, with over 37 municipalities and authorities served. Pinkard relies on its vast subcontractor relationships to obtain the most accurate and competitive pricing possible, engaging with multiple trade partners early to provide critical input on materials and options for flexibility in cost control. Another challenge is pricing multiple design iterations for months before locking down final costs. The project team interprets materials markets and provides accurate future cost estimates. Pinkard’s close relationships with major suppliers keep them constantly updated on pricing trends, which benefits the client's budget. With new material delays showing up almost daily, the team constantly monitors these situations, allowing them to suggest more readily available alternatives. Breaking ground in August of 2024, Pinkard’s is currently renovating of Broomfield’s Bay Aquatic Park, which centers around the replacement of the well-loved facility’s leisure pool that Pinkard constructed over thirty years earlier. During preconstruction, the Pinkard team suggested replacing the traditional concrete and tile gutters initially specified in the Design Development drawings with an innovative stainless-steel system that not only saved on costs but also shortened the schedule by three-to-four weeks, which the City of Broomfield ultimately opted to go with. Ensuring Quality During Construction Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) are paramount concerns on any Pinkard job, but the stakes are especially high on pool projects where mistakes and defects can be incredibly costly. While building Commerce City’s Bison Ridge Recreation Center in 2018, Pinkard identified potential contradictions between the grading work and the geotechnical report that could affect the long-term viability of the pool. In response the team called a “dirt summit” involving 14 stakeholders, including the excavator, pool subcontractor, structural and civil engineers, architect, and owner. The most important quality assurance measure for any new pool shell is the water tightness test, in which the pool is filled and monitored over several days for any leakage. Since the adoption of the American Concrete Insitute’s formal testing procedure (ACI 350.1) in 2010, Pinkard has never failed a water tightness test. Given that many outdoor pool projects in Colorado are completed during winter, Pinkard has also developed specialty protocols for scheduling and completing work around the inevitable wet and freezing conditions that can disrupt concrete cure times and the installation of tile other specialty pool products. Indoor natatoriums present their own challenges. During both precon and construction, the Pinkard team vets and confirms critical details regarding the pool enclosure's ability to resist corrosion and the quality of specialty paints and coatings that seal sensitive surfaces. Pinkard also has the experience and knowledge needed to coordinate and install the required mechanical and pool equipment, such as pumps, filters, dehumidification systems, and specialty equipment like wave generators. Commissioning, in which we a facility’s various mechanical systems are calibrated for performance and efficiency, is another crucial stage in pool construction, and the team provides considerable attention and manpower to meet strict testing and performance standards for the facility. Going the Extra Mile for the Community Given that the majority of pool and recreation projects Pinkard takes on are occupied renovations where part of the facility remains open during construction, Pinkard has developed strict safety and security procedures that protect staff and visitors, as well as minimizing the disruption construction has on programming and people’s ability to enjoy of the rec center. To account for who is on-site at what time, the team ensures deliveries on time and requires construction crew badging and background checks. The team also carefully considers public access points and areas during construction, always maintaining physical and visual separation between the public and the construction work. This was certainly the case for Pinkard's 2021 renovation of Margaret Carpenter Recreation Center, in which the team gutted and expanded the existing natatorium to include a new six-lane lap pool, an aqua-exercise pool, a wave pool with lazy river and bubble pit, a zero-depth activity pool with play structure, geysers and water slide, and a therapeutic hydro-jet spa. The facility remained open to the public throughout construction, and Pinkard used safety and operational protocols to ensure guest and staff safety while minimizing impacts on daily operations. Recognizing that the public inconveniences related to occupied construction are not always popular, Pinkard takes a proactive approach to keeping the local community informed and excited about their projects. At Moorhead Recreation Center for the City of Aurora, for example, the team held hard hat tours of the job site to keep the excitement high and helped organize a "job fair" for local children to see the finished product and to allow our team to discuss our experience building the project. Similarly at Bay Aquatic Park in Broomfield, when site constraints necessitated that construction vehicles be routed through a residential neighborhood, Pinkard worked with city officials to develop a community outreach program that proactively engaged the affected residents, explaining the decision and including them in solutions for mitigating disruption and neighborhood safety concerns. In addition to enforcing strict hours and speed limits for construction vehicles in the neighborhood, and posting regular updates (plus a live cam) on the city’s website, the team holds recurring “info + coffee” events in the local park where residents can ask questions about the project and air concerns, which Pinkard can then work to alleviate. The project is located just two blocks from the Louisiana/Pearl light rail station in Denver’s desirable Platt Park neighborhood. Confluent Development , in partnership with Narrate Companies , is the project owner, and construction is anticipated to be completed in October 2022. Pinkard Breaks Ground on Jacoby Meadows Affordable Senior Apartments Pinkard Breaks Ground on Jacoby Meadows Affordable Senior Apartments August 15, 2024 Share Share The Town of Windsor took a major step forward in assuring its elder residents will have an affordable place to live as Pinkard Construction and the Windsor Housing Authority (WHA) broke ground on the Jacoby Meadows Senior Apartments complex this week. Developed in partnership with the Loveland Housing Authority (LHA) and WORKSHOP8 Architecture—with funding from the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority (CHFA), Wells Fargo, the Impact Development Fund, the Rocky Mountain Community Reinvestment Corporation, and the Town of Windsor—the two-phase project will initially create 62 age-restricted units serving low to moderate income seniors (30-80% of area median income) over the age of 55. The second phase, which is still seeking funding, will add an additional 61 units. Construction of the first 63,000 square foot, $17.5 million facility is expected to take 12 months. Held on the morning of August 14, the groundbreaking ceremony featured remarks by Windsor Mayor Julie Cline, as well as representatives from WHA, LHA, and CHFA, all of whom touched upon the particularly challenging process of making Jacoby Meadows a reality. “Being here today is a little bit surreal for me, as this is a project I've been working on since first joining the board in 2019,” said WHA Board of Commissioners Chairperson Frankie Cole. “Today's event truly is the culmination of several years of volunteer effort and collaboration between so many in our community, past and present commissioners, past and present town board members, and several strategic partners... [who] recognize the critical need for more affordable housing for our senior population here in Windsor.” “This project has been particularly challenging,” said LHA Executive Director Jeff Feneis. “It's been five years in the making, three rounds of tax credit applications with CHFA, a minor redesign, a significant redesign... and just incredible challenges putting our pro forma together over the past two years as tax credit pricing went down, interest rates went up, and construction prices went up. But with the help of a lot of people who are here today, we got it done.” “We’re excited to partner again with our friends at Loveland Housing Authority, along with Windsor Housing Authority and WORKSHOP8,” said Pinkard President Tony Burke after the ceremony. “There's a higher and higher demand for affordable housing in northern Colorado, and we've been creative working with our partners to figure out how to secure the funding for this project. We’re already looking forward to undertaking Phase II three to five years down the road.” In her own remarks, Mayor Cline said, “This is a significant milestone to our community... The Town of Windsor, together with the Windsor Housing Authority, is dedicated to providing quality affordable housing to our residents,” underlining how Jacoby Meadows adds to the 142 affordable units already provided by the two entities. The mayor added that this project is especially meaningful to her and the Windsor community, because it was named to honor John “Johnny” Jacoby, a beloved lifelong Windsor resident who was senselessly gunned down in 2015 while riding his bike, just up the road from the building site, in a case that remains unsolved today. “Johnny was a good friend to many in our town,” said the mayor, “and naming this project after him is a way of keeping his spirit alive.” Members of Jacoby’s family were present at the groundbreaking and thanked the project developers for choosing to permanently honor his memory. Pinkard Construction Awarded Bay Aquatic Park Renovation Pinkard Construction Awarded Bay Aquatic Park Renovation April 30, 2024 Share Share Pinkard Construction has been awarded the renovation project for the Bay Aquatic Park Phase IV in Broomfield. Project cost is estimated at $9 million and will include the removal and replacement of the primary leisure pool, family slide, body slides, and slide plunge pool, along with the addition of deck space, shade structures, and a new mechanical building. Pinkard was the general contractor for the original aquatic park when it was first built in 1991. Additionally, it was the first community water park in the Denver metro area, and due to age, condition, and updated health and building codes, the facility needs renovation. In 2022, BHA Design, Inc. and their team, including Counsilman-Hunsaker, were selected to design the project. Schematic design drawings were submitted in September 2022, and the project paused while additional funding was secured. Currently, the design is progressing toward the delivery of final construction drawings. "We are thrilled to have been awarded this project," said Tony Burke, president of Pinkard Construction. "We have a long history of successful pool construction projects in Colorado, and we are excited to bring our expertise to the renovation of Broomfield Bay Aquatic Park.
