  • Volunteer Stories: Interview Skills for the Next Generation

Volunteer Stories: Interview Skills for the Next Generation Volunteer Stories: Interview Skills for the Next Generation 2024-05-14 Share Share As part of our long, proud legacy of giving back to the community, Pinkard Construction gives all its employees 16 annual hours of VTO , or Volunteer Time Off. In other words, we pay our employees to pursue charity work. Recently, Pinkard HR Administrator Tanya Navarro used her VTO for the first time to give back to an organization that’s near and dear to her heart. “I volunteered with the College Assistance Migrant Program, out of BUENO Center at CU, which provides financial support, mentorship, and opportunities to migrant farm workers and their children,” she explains. “I used to be a beneficiary of the program, so it feels amazing to give back to the next generation.” Putting her HR expertise to good use, Tanya helped conduct mock job interviews with first-year college students, giving them tips, feedback, and real-life practice for how to present themselves. Tanya adds, “A lot of these young people are interested in studying construction, so it was extra special to be able to share the industry expertise I’ve gained at Pinkard to help prepare kids for entering the workforce.” While Pinkard employees can use their VTO on any charity they choose, we also create our own volunteer opportunities through our community outreach program, The Pink Crew , which in the past has included projects for Habitat for Humanity, rebuilding a deck at Jeffco’s beloved Outdoor Lab , and packing and delivering groceries for Food for Thought . In fact, one of the Pink Crew’s biggest events of the year is coming up soon. Going down on Friday, June 7, at the Pinkard Yard in Westminster, Pinkard employees will be breaking out their tool belts to build bed frames for Sleep in Heavenly Peace , an award-winning nonprofit that delivers beds to children who don’t have one. Sign up here! When it comes to the Pink Crew, Tanya adds that there are unexpected benefits too: “When I volunteered for one of the Habitat for Humanity projects, I got to work with Terry Wevers, who is a superintendent with us,” she recalls. “Since I work in the office and he’s out in the field, we don’t have a lot of opportunities to get to know each other, but after volunteering together I got to know a whole new side to Terry. Now we love to crack jokes together, and we work better together as a result.” For those doubting the personal rewards of volunteering, or the difference they can make, Tanya says her volunteer experiences couldn’t have been better: “Everybody has a special skillset and a place where they can be of service. If you share it with people, it makes the community and world around us a better place. I enjoy it so much that I would take personal day if we didn’t have VTO, but the fact that Pinkard recognizes and encourages it is such a bonus.” Learn More Share This Story Share Share More News Sort By Topic Reset Willoughby Corner: BCHA's Landmark Affordable Housing Development 2025-07-15 Learn More Pinkard Completes Bay Aquatic Park On Time and Under Budget 2025-07-07 Learn More Project Rewind: Prioritizing the Needs of 275 Seniors at Clermont Park 2025-07-09 Learn More Pinkard Tops Out Phase III of The Edge 2025-06-25 Learn More Load More Our Approach Partner, Plan, BUILD. • Pinkard Breaks Ground on Phase III of The Edge

Pinkard Breaks Ground on Phase III of The Edge Pinkard Breaks Ground on Phase III of The Edge 2024-12-19 Share Share Last week, on a sunny December morning, developers, residents and members of the community broke ground on the capstone phase of The Edge affordable apartments community in Loveland. Held on site, the ceremony included remarks from project and funding partners, as well as Loveland Mayor Pro-Tem Jon Mallo. The Edge Phase III is the third and final chapter in the Edge Apartments story, once again uniting the owner-architect-contractor partnership of Loveland Housing Authority (LHA), OZ Architecture and Pinkard Construction. Expected to be completed in early 2026, the 52,170 square foot expansion will add three new 3-story buildings containing 66 new units, complementing the 139 apartments constructed in the previous two phases and bringing the total development to 205 units. Featuring a mix of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments, the new units will serve households with incomes from 30% to 60% of the area median income. “There are a lot of special things about this campus, from creating permanent supportive housing for formerly homeless veterans in Phase I, to adding studio units to Phase II that allowed us to house young adults coming out of foster care,” said Jeff Feneis, Executive Directors of the Loveland Housing Authority. “We're really excited to get the team back together, with Pinkard Construction and OZ Architecture, and to complete construction of The Edge campus with these last 66 units.” Pinkard President Tony Burke echoed those sentiments: “More than a decade after we started planning on Phase I, we are delighted to once again return to The Edge and finish what we started with two of our strongest longtime partners: Loveland Housing Authority and OZ Architecture.” Completed in 2016, Phase I of The Edge consisted of an 82,000-sf ground-up facility with 70-units of affordable housing for working families and survivors of the 2012 High Park Fire and September 2013 floods, plus permanent supportive housing for homeless veterans. Completed in 2021, the 80,000-sf Phase II added another 69 affordable units for working families. The campus also contains a clubhouse, urban gardens, tot lot, walking trails, and open space, with immediate access to the neighboring business park, retail, and professional services. All three phases are designed and constructed to meet Enterprise Green Communities Criteria. Project financing includes Low Income Housing Tax Credits and municipal and private funding from sources that include Wells Fargo, Colorado Housing and Finance Authority (CHFA), Colorado Division of Housing (CDOH), and Loveland Housing Development Corporation (LHDC). As the demand for new affordable housing in Loveland continues to grow, LHA is excited to add these 66 new units to our community’s affordable housing inventory when Phase III is completed. In addition, Pinkard announced that Joe Revielle will be promoted to Construction Manager, reporting to Chambliss, and offering direct supervision of all construction projects assigned to him. • Pinkard Begins Improvements on Two More Banner Health Centers

Pinkard Begins Improvements on Two More Banner Health Centers Pinkard Begins Improvements on Two More Banner Health Centers 2024-08-07 Share Share This month, Pinkard Construction begins tenant improvements on two Banner Health campuses in Northern Colorado. Mountain Vista Medical Center (MVMC) and Nor thern Colorado Family Medicine (NCFM), both in Greeley, will receive cosmetic upgrades beginning in late August a nd running th rough the end of November . Both projects will be occupied and constructed concurrently, with a total budget of $626,876. The MVMC building’s scope of work will span the urology department, the rehabilitation department, the gastrointestinal wing, and the orthopedic department, and feature new finishes and details such as redesigned reception areas and other cosmetic upgrades including paint, flooring, and casework repairs. The NCFM building’s updates will include a new reception desk area, upgrades to nurse station countertops and offices, and new paint throughout. “At the heart of it, we’re upgrading their current workspaces to make their office staff and clientele more comfortable,” says Pinkard Assistant Project Manager Krystyl Alexander. “The changes might seem small, but they make a big difference for people who are working or being treated in the building.” The job’s biggest challenge will be completing all renovations while the medical center remains fully and continuously occupie d. With an intricate phasing plan and schedule that will allow for work in both buildings simultaneously, Pinkard will rely heavily on its close partnerships with subcontractors and constant communication with the department heads in each building to complete the project smoothly. “We really had to get creative with an in-depth phasing plan to be sure that we are only working in a given area when the department allows us to,” Alexander explains. “It’s kind of a logistical maze, where we’re going in when there aren't patients in those spaces and sprucing them up overnight before people come back in. It’s been a fun challenge scheduling-wise to get that right." Back in 2022 Pinkard completed a similar refurbishment of Banner Health’s North Colorado Medical Center (NCMC), in addition to building over 55 healthcare projects across Colorado's Front Range. “We are proud to work with an outstanding partner like Banner Health,” says Alexander. “Each project allows us to deepen our understanding of Banner’s needs and the challenges of working in occupied medical environments, and it feels good knowing we are helping essential workers do their job more efficiently in spaces that aid in their productivity.” Learn More Healthcare Renovations and New Construction See Projects Occupied Renovation Construction See Projects Share This Story Share Share More News Sort By Topic Reset Willoughby Corner: BCHA's Landmark Affordable Housing Development 2025-07-15 Learn More Pinkard Completes Bay Aquatic Park On Time and Under Budget 2025-07-07 Learn More Project Rewind: Prioritizing the Needs of 275 Seniors at Clermont Park 2025-07-09 Learn More Pinkard Tops Out Phase III of The Edge 2025-06-25 Learn More Load More Our Approach Partner, Plan, BUILD. • Willoughby Corner First Phase Construction Plan Goes to City of Lafayette

Willoughby Corner First Phase Construction Plan Goes to City of Lafayette Willoughby Corner First Phase Construction Plan Goes to City of Lafayette 2023-01-11 Share Share Willoughby Corner, the Boulder County Housing Authority’s (BCHA’s) upcoming new neighborhood of permanently affordable homes in east Lafayette, continues to advance toward construction starting early next year, with its first phase of construction targeting a February groundbreaking. Willoughby Corner, the Boulder County Housing Authority’s (BCHA’s) upcoming new neighborhood of permanently affordable homes in east Lafayette, continues to advance toward construction starting early next year, with its first phase of construction targeting a February groundbreaking. Pinkard Construction, an affordable housing general contractor celebrating 60 years in Colorado , was awarded the project in 2022 and is working closely with Norris Design and HB&A Architects . “Pinkard is excited to be a part of BCHA’s mission to provide housing relief to the families, individuals, single parents, older adults, and people living with disabilities in the area,” said Tony Burke, President of Pinkard Construction. “It’s no secret that rising housing prices have made renting and homeownership unattainable for many and Willoughby Corner is a lifeline for many.” In October, BCHA received approval from the City of Lafayette for Willoughby Corner’s Planned Unit Development application, which sets the framework and rules for proceeding through the multiple phases of the site plan, including construction. In November, Willoughby Corner received a crucial second award of 4 percent Low-Income Housing Tax Credits from the Colorado Housing Finance Authority that will help cover the costs of the development. On January 11, the Lafayette Planning Commission will consider BCHA’s next major step, the development Site Plan, which focuses on architecture and site-specific elements for each proposed lot in the Willoughby Corner neighborhood. “This is an exciting time in the life of Willoughby Corner,” said BCHA Senior Housing Developer Molly Chiang. “Now is the moment when it really begins to come to life in terms of what it will look like and how it will be built on the site. We are thrilled to be able to work so closely with city staff and Lafayette community members to make this important step forward for an area where affordable housing is so needed.” Lafayette's median home listing price is now approaching $600,000, while rentals are averaging over $1,900 per month, unattainable for many community members, especially those in lower- and middle-income brackets. Across Boulder County, more than 21,000 households are spending over half their income on housing costs. Willoughby Corner will serve households earning 60 percent or less of the Area Median Income (AMI) with below-market-rate rental homes and for-sale options for households earning up to 120 percent AMI. For a three-person household, these incomes equate to maximums of $67,000 for rental housing and $135,000 per year for for-sale housing, respectively. BCHA’s affordable homes save residents hundreds of dollars per month in rent and utilities, ensuring income is available for other important needs and making it easier to save money, including for future home purchases. Willoughby Corner will cater to families, individuals, single parents, older adults, people living with disabilities, and more. It will also support Lafayette’s workforce and the businesses that employ them. In addition to the 400 affordable homes built in multiple phases, Willoughby Corner buildings are Net Zero Energy Ready. They will feature solar photovoltaics, geothermal heating and cooling, and electric charging stations, a network of community gardens, pedestrian and bike trails, and access to transit. With Site Plan approvals, construction on Willoughby Corner’s 55-and-over homes could begin as early as February 2023, with move-ins possible by spring 2024. BCHA could begin taking applications for these homes beginning in fall 2023. BCHA will provide updates at www.WilloughbyCorner.org . • Schlessman Family YMCA | Pinkard Construction | Colorado

Pinkard provided expert construction services for YMCA of Metropolitan Denver on the Schlessman Family YMCA project. Schlessman Family YMCA Denver, Colorado, USA YMCA of Metropolitan Denver 11,000 Sq. Ft. Recreation, Non-Profit This extensive expansion included refinishing the main corridor with the ground, stained, and polished concrete; converting several small offices into a large cycling studio with a new storefront system and accent wall; expanding existing locker room space to create a Mindfulness Yoga Studio; demolishing key dividing walls to combine the existing cycling studio with the existing cardio area; expanding the teen area, and a kitchen remodel that includes rerouting plumbing within the slab-on-metal-deck crawl space. Pinkard also performed electrical rerouting and upgrades to accommodate the expanded program space. The painting subcontractor was owner-contracted for Schlessman and Susan M. Duncan. Pinkard worked the painting subcontractor’s scope into the overall construction schedule and managed the work for the owner, including holding the subcontractor accountable for the schedule. During floor-cover demolition, Pinkard provided a creative fix for an unforeseen floor-height discrepancy that threatened the owner’s budget and schedule Both projects finished on time and within the budget, which included owner-initiated change orders for unforeseen conditions, code requirements, and owner scope additions. The Schlessman YMCA expansion featured interior upgrades to a YMCA that is nearing the end of its functional adequacy. Slated for demolition in the not-too-distant future, YMCA elected to incorporate minimal remodels to the reception area including new floor coverings, along with select demising wall demolitions to open-up certain spaces and allow for expanded adaptability for key programs in this YMCA. • 4725 South Lowell | Pinkard Construction | Colorado

Pinkard provided expert construction services for Denver Housing Authority on the 4725 South Lowell project. 4725 South Lowell Denver, Colorado, USA Denver Housing Authority 100,201 Sq. Ft., 96 Units Affordable Housing, Multi-Family Housing, Extensive Site Infrastructure, Enterprise Green Communities, Wood Framed, Tight Site, Sustainable, LIHTC, Occupied, Addition, Renovation, Ground Up 4725 S. Lowell, an affordable multi-family apartment development owned by the Denver Housing Authority (DHA) was built in 1964. Its leaking pipes, mold, structural damage and inefficient heat for both the units and hot water were just a few of the many problems prompting DHA to initiate a rehabilitation of this property. Along with rehabilitation of the existing structure, DHA wanted to add 50% more units to the site. Initially, the idea was to "pop-the-to" and add an extra level, but it was found that the structure couldn't support this approach. The existing building is a "square donut" with a large center courtyard so the idea was proposed to build another structure inside this courtyard, something that has never before been done in Denver. This approach had many valuable outcomes including fitting in with the scale of the neighborhood and effectively making the new 4-story structure "disappear". This project had many challenges, most of which were a result of the building-within-a-building design. Myriad issues with fire codes and site drainage had to be solved and close coordination between Pinkard, DHA and WORKSHOP 8 was essential. The new building, comprising 91,900 sf is an attractive structure which meets Enterprise Green Communities Standards. Pinkard Tops Out Phase III of The Edge Read More "I don't expect perfection, I just expect a near-perfect response; and that's what we got from Pinkard." Municipal Client "It really was a team. It felt like Pinkard was just an extension of us." Affordable Housing Client "Pinkard was good with the constructability review. Preconstruction. When given the opportunity, Pinkard did a great job with VE-type stuff, constructability, and asking some hard questions. I can remember the mechanical engineer getting grilled pretty well; somebody at Pinkard picked up that there were some issues with the ductwork."
