Pinkard Completes Construction on Multi-Family Development in Platt Park Neighborhood Pinkard Completes Construction on Multi-Family Development in Platt Park Neighborhood 2023-01-25 Share Share Pinkard Construction, a Multi-Family Housing general contractor celebrating 60 years in Colorado, completed construction for Carraway on Penn . Located just two blocks from the Louisiana/Pearl light rail station in Denver’s desirable Platt Park neighborhood, the 34,619-square-foot multifamily residential property offers 42-units with a focus on small unit sizes with lower monthly gross rents. Denver-based investment and development firm Confluent Development, in partnership with Narrate Companies , is the project owner. Throughout construction, Pinkard worked closely with OZ Architecture . Tony Burke, Pinkard’s president, says the project is a natural fit for Pinkard’s teams and project partners at Confluent and Narrate as the collaborative development journey drew upon extensive experience in building multifamily projects across Colorado. “Confluent Development and our project partners have done a tremendous job delivering new and innovative multifamily spaces to Denver, and we’re very excited to be a part of the Carraway project.” – Tony Burke, president of Pinkard Construction. In December 2021, the project partners celebrated the groundbreaking and official start of construction. “Thanks to the close collaboration with our project partners at Pinkard, Narrate, and OZ, we remained on track to deliver a complex, high-quality multifamily product within the budget that will offer a boutique and sophisticated residential opportunity in Platt Park at an attainable price point,” said Nick Kitaeff, senior development director at Confluent Development. “Carraway on Penn is primed to seamlessly integrate into this community, one of Denver’s most beloved neighborhoods.” The property incorporates features that adapt to today’s changing workplace, such as shared workspaces and upscale finishes. It will appeal to those seeking an active yet simplistic lifestyle with convenient access to mass transit, parks and recreation, and nearby shopping and dining. “Pinkard’s customer service and collaborative spirit are among the best in the industry. From groundbreaking to the grand opening, we are thankful to have Pinkard as a strong partner and celebrate their team for this notable milestone at Carraway on Penn,” said Dean Barber, executive vice president of development management at Confluent Development. “Pinkard, Confluent, and the rest of the time did a great executing and delivering this project in an extremely challenging construction environment. We are excited to bring high-quality units to an extremely supply-constrained market,” said Adam Fenton of Narrate Companies. To date, Pinkard has completed nearly 200 multi-family projects totaling $2.5 billion in construction. • Pinkard Names New Chief Business Development Officer

Pinkard Names New Chief Business Development Officer Pinkard Names New Chief Business Development Officer 2022-06-03 Share Share Pinkard Construction names Jose Amaya as its New Chief Business Development Officer. Amaya, an experienced construction professional with over 35 years of experience, will push the company into additional markets while maintaining controlled growth. "I see enormous potential in Pinkard for markets like healthcare, mission-critical, life science, and aerospace, to name a few," said Amaya. " I hope that we can branch out while still maintaining the same level of construction quality, safety, and client intimacy." Amaya said Pinkard's homegrown history and deep roots in the community are significant differentiators in this crowded construction market. "A company celebrating its 60th anniversary in a market where some of the largest general contractors in the country are competing for work means they offer something the big guys cannot," he explains. "I want to help them scale their business in a way that preserves that client experience." Amaya has served in executive-level business development roles at companies like JE Dunn Construction, Cumming Corporation, and, most recently, Select Building Group Commercial. He has been identifying opportunities and building relationships with Colorado Owners, Developers, General Contractors, and Architectural/Engineering firms for the last 25 years. Tony Burke, President of Pinkard Construction, says that now that the company is completing projects valued in the $100 million range, they are excited to bring their unique capabilities to new markets. He adds that the person representing them must be the perfect mix of Pinkard's past and future. "The diversity of [Jose's] experience is important to why we hired him," said Burke. "The fact that he started his career on the operations side and his work growing small businesses and minority contractors is an excellent fit for Pinkard's culture." Amaya will work closely with Burke and the rest of Pinkard's executive leadership team to formalize a strategy that focuses on client retention and acquisition throughout the Colorado Front Range. • Pinkard Self Performs Unique Design Features

Pinkard Self Performs Unique Design Features Pinkard Self Performs Unique Design Features 2022-03-14 Share Share On the Moorhead Recreation Center project, BRS’s impressive rope wall was thoroughly mocked up in miniature during design. During bidding, the feature was so unique only one subcontractor was willing to “throw a number at it” — to the tune of $20,000. Convinced that the number was excessive, Pinkard decided to self-perform the work. After all, we would just be running a length of rope through a series of eyelets, pulling the rope tight, and we’d be done. We set aside one person to do the work in one day. When it came time to construct the 70-foot-long art piece, the installation procedures determined during the mock-up phase didn’t work: the rope wouldn’t slide through the eyelets, and tensioning the rope to the required specifications caused stainless steel eyelet bolts to strip and shoot out at an alarming velocity entirely. Senior PM Derek Stathis: “This installation was incredibly complicated. We had different colored climbing ropes looped up and down within a steel frame, with the loops interconnecting to form a colorful waterfall pattern. But you can’t just weave it all simultaneously and tighten it. You have to put it through a top, loop it in the middle of the frame with another section of rope coming up from the bottom, then pull it to the top; then use the come-along to tighten it; clamp it off, then do another loop. You can’t pull more than one at a time because the eyelets are too small to let the rope slide freely. Our field engineer did it a little bit, and he got blisters. We did this for 1,000 feet of rope.” Ultimately, this one-person job required two carpenters two full weeks to complete, and it required several field modifications including the addition of carabiners to help the rope slide and a rope safety system to eliminate the risk of the eyelet bolts blowing out. The completed rope wall is stunning and the recreation center's crown jewel. • Pinkard Makes Sweeping Changes to Preconstruction Services Under New Leadership

Pinkard Makes Sweeping Changes to Preconstruction Services Under New Leadership Pinkard Makes Sweeping Changes to Preconstruction Services Under New Leadership 2024-02-02 Share Share Pinkard, a leading construction company in Colorado, promoted Leighton Neff to Chief Preconstruction Manager in February 2023. In his first year at the helm, Neff has made sweeping changes to better serve Pinkard clients in providing accurate pricing and constructability assessments for all projects. These changes are built on Neff’s rich and varied experience with Pinkard. Hired from CSU’s Construction Management program in 2007, Neff began as a project engineer. He has since worked up to project superintendent and manager roles. Neff joined preconstruction in 2018 as a hybrid project/preconstruction manager. In 2020, Leighton joined the Pinkard preconstruction department full-time. "My experience in the field uniquely positions me to assess the constructability of a project and provide accurate pricing, helping to avoid permitting and funding delays,” said Neff. “Overworked teams cannot perform at the level our clients expect; avoiding staff burnout is critical,” said Neff. “Our goal is to continue to provide the highest value to our clients in preconstruction services by ensuring my team has all the resources they need and is working at a capacity compatible with driving excellence.” Neff notes that he is extremely fortunate to work with great partners who truly appreciate the value Pinkard brings to their projects. “I have an excellent leadership team at my disposal who can lend their vast experience to our projects well before we turn a shovel of dirt. Their expertise makes a huge difference in outcomes,” said Neff. One of these frequent collaborators is Pinkard's Quality Control Manager, Troy Bohlender, another long-tenured Pinkard employee with over two decades of field experience. “Troy works with my whole team on assessing schedules, verifying plans and picking up on small details that are easy to miss but can cost tens of thousands of dollars in delays or rework. He’s an invaluable resource,” adds Neff. Tony Burke, President of Pinkard, notes that Neff's skills in helping clients navigate the fluctuating labor and materials markets, avoiding cost escalations, and working with architects to optimize project design without sacrificing project scope and design intent make him an invaluable member of the Pinkard team. "Over the last year Leighton has done an outstanding job as Chief Preconstruction Manager," said Burke. "His experience and expertise in the field, combined with his commitment to providing the highest level of client service, make him a natural fit for this role. The department is thriving under his leadership." • A Culture of Safety Excellence

A Culture of Safety Excellence A Culture of Safety Excellence 2024-05-10 Share Share At Pinkard Construction, safety is not just a core value, it’s the central focus of everything we do. “Safety is not just a priority, it's the priority ,” says Safety Manager David Ruddy, better known on the jobsite as Safety Dave. Dave is a passionate advocate for creating a culture of safety that extends beyond the workplace. “For me, safety comes down to one thing: your why. For most of us, that’s our loved ones. Working safe, for us and for everyone around us, means coming home healthy and whole every single day.”  That’s why Safety Dave rejects the old saying “Safety First,” instead preaching the mantra, “Family first, safety always.”  Dave continues: “We want to make sure that everyone who works for us knows that their safety is key to the success of our company. And it means making sure that everyone else on our jobsite—fellow workers, neighbors, passers-by and visitors to the site—do too.” Rather than simply policing safety violations, Pinkard believes that creating a positive culture of safety is the key to ensuring everyone on the job site stays safe. “We want to create a culture where safety is not just a set of rules and regulations, but an integral part of the way we work,” Dave explains. “We make sure people know their ‘why’ and then we equip them with the best possible training. We create processes and procedures that make it easy to work safely. Everyone must feel empowered to speak up if they see something that is not safe.”  In addition to physical safety, Pinkard is also committed to promoting mental health awareness and providing associated resources for its employees. "We recognize that mental health is just as important as physical health. The construction industry has an alarming rate of suicide. That must change. We want our employees to know that it's important to talk about mental health and that we're here to support them."  To help promote holistic wellness, Pinkard has partnered with You Turn Health to provide employees 24/7 access to supportive services for stress, anxiety, depression, substance abuse and suicidal ideation. “Almost all of us have experienced losing a loved one,” says Dave. “Sometimes there’s nothing that could have been done to prevent it, but we are committed to making sure that preventable injuries and deaths never happen on our watch.”   Learn More Our Team Learn More Share This Story Share Share More News Sort By Topic Reset Willoughby Corner: BCHA's Landmark Affordable Housing Development 2025-07-15 Learn More Pinkard Completes Bay Aquatic Park On Time and Under Budget 2025-07-07 Learn More Project Rewind: Prioritizing the Needs of 275 Seniors at Clermont Park 2025-07-09 Learn More Pinkard Tops Out Phase III of The Edge 2025-06-25 Learn More Load More Our Approach Partner, Plan, BUILD. • Adaptive Reuse – A Contractor’s Perspective

Adaptive Reuse – A Contractor’s Perspective Adaptive Reuse – A Contractor’s Perspective 2023-10-17 Share Share According to Wikipedia, adaptive reuse refers to the process of reusing an existing building for a purpose other than that for which it was originally built or designed. Adaptive reuse has been lauded for its ability to save historically significant structures, maintain historical neighborhood context, conserve natural resources, and minimize construction-related disruptions to neighborhoods. But from a purely practical perspective, it can possibly provide a much lower cost construction option. But before jumping into an adaptive re-use project, several factors must be seriously considered. Does your building’s structure lend itself to adaptive reuse? Can you take your office building that has systems at the end of their life cycle, and rather than just replacing the systems, does the structure allow a new layout for one-bedroom affordable apartments? At Denver Housing Authority’s Thomas A. Connole apartments, Pinkard stripped the building down to its concrete skeleton and built 10-story-tall exterior structural concrete walls to convert the 50-year-old building from studio apartments into one- and two-bedroom units. For the City and County of Denver’s Minoru Yasui Plaza project, the former Downtowner Motor Inn was converted into office space. There, Pinkard did comprehensive interior renovations that included installation of a state-of-the-art European hydronic heating system. Both adaptive reuse projects won national acclaim for their creativity and construction excellence. City and County of Denver’s Minoru Yasui Plaza And then there is asbestos abatement, lead-based paint, and aluminum wiring, all of which can break a budget at the start. Denver’s Green Roof Initiative? If you’re putting on a new roof you may be required to include a green roof or a combination of green roof and solar energy collection – both pricey additions. The condition of the exterior skin must also be considered – replacement can complicate construction with time-consuming scaffolding systems and street closures. HVAC systems are typically the highest-cost systems. Compromises in the wrong way will have end users complaining to management on a weekly basis. Will zoning support your intended purpose? Can you go from office space to mixed-use retail/residential and meet parking requirements? What is the required cars-per-thousand-square-feet ratio to support retail and/or residential use? Chances are your office building may not meet that. Regardless of the quality of a building’s as-built drawings ( if you even have any? ) and the level of due diligence, you can be assured that you will run into unforeseen conditions that stall your schedule and take precious dollars out of your budget over and above the 10% contingency allowance most lenders require. Every contractor can provide a long litany of owner/architect/contractor unforeseen condition woes, with a corresponding array of schedule delays and cost increases. Fortunately, there are ways to greatly improve your chances of success. Dedicated collaboration and teamwork can avert potentially disastrous outcomes, and this of course speaks volumes about how you should select your team partners. Your contractor, architect and engineers should have considerable experience with complicated renovations and excellent team skills, and your contractor’s preconstruction team should have a great record of providing accurate estimates for these types of renovations. It’s always best to take a conservative approach when estimating a complex adaptive reuse. Sometimes owners begin with very tight budgets and a huge potential for unforeseen conditions. This makes for a very problematic preconstruction phase, with considerable budgetary headaches and possibly slashing scope. At that point your exciting dream project can become something of a nightmare. It’s also important to be sure that your team’s budgets include ample contingencies and allowances, and that the use of these tools is clearly spelled out. Early in the budgeting phase, Pinkard typically starts with a higher contingency load based upon our custom risk log for your project. For example, if there is asbestos, aluminum wiring, and the windows and HVAC need to be replaced, those factors pretty much dictate your costs. But we can start eliminating the unknowns through testing, exploration, and collaboration with major subcontractors and engineers. 3D laser scanning, ground penetrating radar to scan post-tensioned slabs, basic non-destructive investigations, etc. all combine to provide a better understanding of the many variables that may affect an owner's budget. Pinkard President Tony Burke observes that “Laser scanning is a recent technology our teams are using with great success. It is making a dramatic difference in our abilities to measure every inch of a building to create more constructable designs and more predictable construction plans. The data is uploaded into a building information technology platform. Designers use this data to create more exacting layouts with greatly reduced risk of clashes and layout busts. And the cost/benefit ratio of this technology is overwhelmingly favorable.” A better understanding of risk allows for a reduction in contingency. Pinkard shares this information with the entire team to fully inform the owner. In many cases, with this data, an owner/architect/contractor team should have enough information to manage risk and allow a project to move forward. Every building is adaptable, but not every adaptation is affordable. Put a lot of thought and care into selecting a trusted and responsible team to help you sort through all the details. It is the shortest and best path to a wise decision. Pinkard Completes Beautiful 1899 Wynkoop Amenity Remodel Pinkard Completes Beautiful 1899 Wynkoop Amenity Remodel 2025-05-29 Share Share Pinkard Construction has completed the 1899 Wynkoop Amenity Remodel project in lower downtown Denver (LoDo). The $5.4 million Class A lobby renovation was conducted within a fully occupied LEED Gold certified nine-story office building serving more than 400 office occupants and visitors daily. The scope of the renovation included build-out of a tenant lounge, coffee bar, fitness center with five new restrooms (three with showers), office and conference space, bike storage and an exterior canopy. High end finishes included large format tile from Italy, millwork, interior glass wall systems, storefront, and a custom hybrid curtainwall storefront system. These new amenities required extensive expansion of existing MEP systems with tie-ins in a fully occupied first floor lobby space above a fully operational below-grade parking garage. Pinkard accessed the MEP systems from the parking garage below, working in the ceiling to accomplish most of the in-slab plumbing installations. Disruptive saw cutting and core drilling activities were conducted off-hours. Pinkard also implemented proven pedestrian and vehicular safety measures to minimize disruptions and to ensure safety for tenants and visitors. Noise, dust, and vibration controls included use of panelized dust and sound containment barriers. During preconstruction, a deliberate and meticulous procurement process ensured timely delivery of the Italian tile. Pinkard’s closely managed quality control program ensured tight tolerances for the tile installation. Design-assist subcontracting played a key role in the successful procurement, fabrication, and installation of the two-story full-glass curtainwall system, which is a centerpiece design component of the new lobby area. This project, which is located next to Union Station and Coors Field, finished ahead of schedule and in budget thanks in part to strong field collaboration and problem solving. Interior Architects (IA) was instrumental in construction administration troubleshooting and oversight. “The on-site collaboration necessary to meet the high-end quality standards was significant," says Pinkard Construction Manager Derek Stathis. • Creating Real Paths to Success for Women in Construction

Creating Real Paths to Success for Women in Construction Creating Real Paths to Success for Women in Construction 2024-03-08 Share Share It’s probably not a secret that the construction industry has not always been the most welcoming place for women to be employed. Even today, women make up only 10% of the construction workforce. But with an estimated 45,000 new workers needed in the construction industry by 2027 just in Colorado, changing that landscape is not only the right thing to do, it’s imperative to our success. While change is not easy or straightforward, Pinkard has worked to identify areas of action to encourage women to join and have long, productive careers in the construction industry. These include working at the K-12 level to advocate for careers in construction, actively recruiting women into the industry, providing specific support, and mentoring once they are brought on board.   Early Education Pinkard has invested in recruiting and outreach at the K-12 level. “We are talking with schools and attending career fairs to let kids know that there are great jobs available in the construction industry,” said HR specialist, Tanya Navarro. “There are multiple paths to success. College is a great option, and so are the trades. In the trades, students can learn on the job while they’re making a living and not have to go into debt to learn skills that lead to a job that pays well.” Assistant project manager Krystyl Alexander agrees that positive career influences on young women can greatly boost the prospects of increasing the construction labor pool and giving women golden opportunities to flourish in a wide-open career market. “Construction seems to offer more job security and better pay than many conventional women-centric careers. My number one priority was “can I get a job after graduation? A lot of my friends in other majors have struggled to find work and are in the realm of ‘educated but unemployed.’”  Actively Recruiting Women Pinkard strategically targets events and organizations that cater to women in the industry. “Although we strive for a diverse workforce that represents both our community’s demographic and our clients’, we always hire the strongest talent for the job. We intentionally remain agnostic to the demographic of the candidate when making a hiring decision. With greater applicant flow from women, we are, however, finding more often the best person for the job is a woman. Not because she is a woman, but because of the technical skills, soft skills, experience and potential that she has earned,” says Navarro. Pinkard has also worked to train hiring managers to recognize bias and eliminated automated differentiation of resumes to include more people who have taken non-traditional career paths. “Not everyone comes to construction in the same way, but talent is talent and we want to hire that talent regardless of how those skills were acquired,” says construction manager Joe Revielle. “We have people who switched careers midstream and people who worked their way up through the trades as well as people who came to us straight out of construction management programs. They all have the ability to do great work and bring huge value to our clients.” Pinkard intern Kristy Swisher is a great example of someone with a non-traditional path into the industry. After starting a family and running her own business outside of the construction industry, COVID-19 threatened her livelihood. Considering a career change, Kristy took advantage of some available college grant money and enrolled in MSU Denver’s construction management program. She is currently in her first construction internship and has just over a year to go before graduation. Kristy is working on Pinkard’s South Metro Fire Rescue project and loves her project teammates. “When I first walked into the job trailer, I thought ‘Oh wow! Fish out of water! I’m the only woman here.’ But I quickly realized that no one was treating me that way. That ‘elephant in the room’ was strictly in my head.’ Once I got over that initial insecurity it has been great!” Support and Mentorship for Women Pinkard has also prioritized the support and mentorship for women coming into the industry. “We recognized a need for a group to specifically target some of the shortcomings in our industry. So we took AGC’s lead and created an internal Culture of CARE committee at Pinkard. One of the pillars of that group is to ensure that our teammates have support and mentorship as they move forward with us,” says Pinkard president Tony Burke. Alexander believes that Pinkard’s emphasis on understanding personalities is a great foundation for women seeking success in construction. “The ability to understand the personalities of the entire team helps us to understand people of different backgrounds with different insights, experience, and diversity, and that makes you stronger as a team and encourages the success of the individual.”  The Future Looks Bright “Hiring and training new talent from all walks of life is pivotally important to our industry. In addition to providing us with the quantity of talent we need, attracting people from across the spectrum provides important new perspectives, ideas, and ways of doing things. The diversity makes us better,” says Burke. Learn More Careers Apply Today!
