  • Pinkard Breaks Ground on 400-Unit Affordable Housing Development

Pinkard Breaks Ground on 400-Unit Affordable Housing Development Pinkard Breaks Ground on 400-Unit Affordable Housing Development 2023-07-21 Share Share Pinkard Construction, a leading affordable housing contractor, broke ground today on Willoughby Corner , a 400-unit affordable housing development in Lafayette, Colorado. The project is a collaboration between the Boulder County Housing Authority (BCHA), the City of Lafayette, Pinkard Construction, Norris Design , and HB&A Architects . Colorado Lieutenant Governor, Dianne Primavera, noted in her remarks at the ceremony that Willoughby Corner would be the largest net-zero-ready affordable housing development in Colorado when complete. The buildings will utilize solar and geothermal technology and incorporate highly energy-efficient building designs and materials. The first homes, 63 affordable ADA-accessible apartments for adults age 55 and over, will be ready for move-in as early as fall 2024. The first phase also includes 129 affordable multi-family homes and a community center. “We are here to celebrate this amazing, whole neighborhood of affordable housing... with community gardens, a transit mobility hub with bus access, car sharing, and [electric vehicle] charging,” said Norrie Boyd, director of BCHA. “We will have walking trails and electric, built for the future buildings, all designed with trauma-informed design, so everyone feels welcome in their homes here.” “It’s amazing to work with Pinkard Construction; every individual... puts their heart and soul into this project,” said Molly Chiang, Senior Developer with BCHA. “They have been with us since the very early days of design, and they have been able to guide the whole team and get us to where we are now.” The project is made possible through the City of Lafayette’s financial support with nearly $1.5 million in fee waivers for the first phases of the project, the $3.1M purchase of the land, and $5.3M in grants for Willoughby’s water rights. Willoughby Corner is also possible because of Boulder County Commissioners’ help with funding. Over the past year, Commissioners have added nearly $13 million in county and American Rescue Plan Act funds to help ensure Willoughby Corner can continue to advance through financing and approvals processes and that construction on its first phase can begin on time. “Willoughby Corner is a shining example of what can be accomplished when we work together to address the affordable housing crisis,” said Pinkard President Tony Burke. “I’m proud of the work that Pinkard has done to keep this project on track despite a global pandemic, materials shortages, and cost escalations that have derailed so many projects.” Willoughby Corner’s affordable homes will serve generations of families, individuals, older adults, and the workforce earning at or below 60 percent of the Area’s Median Income. For example, for a family of three, this amounts to a maximum annual income of $71,760 (2023 HUD). Construction on the first phase of Willoughby Corner is expected to be completed in 2024. • Tony Burke Looks Forward to the Next 60 Years of Pinkard

Tony Burke Looks Forward to the Next 60 Years of Pinkard Tony Burke Looks Forward to the Next 60 Years of Pinkard 2023-03-29 Share Share Pinkard turns 61 Today! At the beginning of the year, Jim Pinkard looked at the history of the company . Now, Tony looks to the future. As of March 30th, Pinkard Construction enters its 61st year serving Colorado senior living, affordable housing, multi-family, recreation, municipal, and commercial clients. Pinkard's President, Tony Burke, thought it was time to look at our future. Burke says the company’s leadership is armed with the wisdom and perspective gained by adapting and growing with this always-evolving construction and development market. “We march forward with a new generation of ownership, new leaders, and new branding,” says Burke. “These decisive changes represent a continuation of fundamental business practices but with a fresh new look and approach to the challenges and opportunities presented in the world of construction today.” Burke says that his leadership team recognizes the importance of changing stereotypes of who can participate in the construction industry. His view is that greater workforce diversity enhances the companies' ability to be creative and competitive and the industry needs to attract the workforce of tomorrow. Burke knows that the need for construction professionals is at an all-time high. A key priority for Burke is investing in Pinkard employees' ongoing development and creating an environment that retains talent. He feels that a company culture with opportunities for growth, stability, and work/life balance will also pay dividends in recruitment. “We aim to create an environment of belonging in our office and jobsites. This industry is a great place to make a living and should be inclusive and representative of our community,” explains Burke. “We strive daily to perform with our core values in mind, knowing that these qualities are the foundations of transparency and tenacity.” Burke also recognizes that mental health is an ongoing challenge within society, specifically in the construction industry. He says Pinkard will continue to expand employee benefits, build cultural supports, and engage with the entire construction industry to ensure a resilient Colorado workforce. “Pinkard's people are its greatest asset,” says Burke. “I feel a responsibility to ensure that our employees have mental health and counseling options as part of their benefits, are using technology that makes their jobs easier, and feel that they have the support from within the company to not only perform but thrive at Pinkard” Burke feels that this emphasis on the health and stability of Pinkard's workforce is the right thing to do, but also allows Pinkard to offer an unparalleled client experience. His teams have the capacity to be collaborative, provide good stewardship to their clients, produce exceptional quality, and add overall financial value to their projects. “Offering our employees the best tools possible not only helps them but offers our clients a greater degree of collaboration, clarity, and control over their project,” says Burke. “We want to provide our clients with a superior construction experience, in addition to the best value” Burke is optimistic when he thinks about the next 60 years of Pinkard. He says he feels that “Going into our 61st year, we are eager to share our excitement and enthusiasm with our friends, clients, and peers. We are thankful to be solidly rooted in the Colorado community and for the expertise of our creative and professional staff. Together we will build great teams, offer great solutions, and provide great value for all our current and future clients.” Learn More Anthony Burke, LEED AP, President Connect Our Projects Learn More Share This Story Share Share More News Sort By Topic Reset Willoughby Corner: BCHA's Landmark Affordable Housing Development 2025-07-15 Learn More Pinkard Completes Bay Aquatic Park On Time and Under Budget 2025-07-07 Learn More Project Rewind: Prioritizing the Needs of 275 Seniors at Clermont Park 2025-07-09 Learn More Pinkard Tops Out Phase III of The Edge 2025-06-25 Learn More Load More Our Approach Partner, Plan, BUILD. Our project (Vida at Sloan’s Lake) took so long to get all the financing partners secured, it pushed us out almost a year, but Pinkard held their pricing. It really was kind of a cool way to do what felt like a design-build approach (under a CMaR contract). • Pinkard Completes Construction on Multi-Family Development in Platt Park Neighborhood

Pinkard Completes Construction on Multi-Family Development in Platt Park Neighborhood Pinkard Completes Construction on Multi-Family Development in Platt Park Neighborhood 2023-01-25 Share Share Pinkard Construction, a Multi-Family Housing general contractor celebrating 60 years in Colorado, completed construction for Carraway on Penn . Located just two blocks from the Louisiana/Pearl light rail station in Denver’s desirable Platt Park neighborhood, the 34,619-square-foot multifamily residential property offers 42-units with a focus on small unit sizes with lower monthly gross rents. Denver-based investment and development firm Confluent Development, in partnership with Narrate Companies , is the project owner. Throughout construction, Pinkard worked closely with OZ Architecture . Tony Burke, Pinkard’s president, says the project is a natural fit for Pinkard’s teams and project partners at Confluent and Narrate as the collaborative development journey drew upon extensive experience in building multifamily projects across Colorado. “Confluent Development and our project partners have done a tremendous job delivering new and innovative multifamily spaces to Denver, and we’re very excited to be a part of the Carraway project.” – Tony Burke, president of Pinkard Construction. In December 2021, the project partners celebrated the groundbreaking and official start of construction. “Thanks to the close collaboration with our project partners at Pinkard, Narrate, and OZ, we remained on track to deliver a complex, high-quality multifamily product within the budget that will offer a boutique and sophisticated residential opportunity in Platt Park at an attainable price point,” said Nick Kitaeff, senior development director at Confluent Development. “Carraway on Penn is primed to seamlessly integrate into this community, one of Denver’s most beloved neighborhoods.” The property incorporates features that adapt to today’s changing workplace, such as shared workspaces and upscale finishes. It will appeal to those seeking an active yet simplistic lifestyle with convenient access to mass transit, parks and recreation, and nearby shopping and dining. “Pinkard’s customer service and collaborative spirit are among the best in the industry. From groundbreaking to the grand opening, we are thankful to have Pinkard as a strong partner and celebrate their team for this notable milestone at Carraway on Penn,” said Dean Barber, executive vice president of development management at Confluent Development. “Pinkard, Confluent, and the rest of the time did a great executing and delivering this project in an extremely challenging construction environment. We are excited to bring high-quality units to an extremely supply-constrained market,” said Adam Fenton of Narrate Companies. Pinkard Names New Chief Business Development Officer Pinkard Names New Chief Business Development Officer 2022-06-03 Share Share Pinkard Construction names Jose Amaya as its New Chief Business Development Officer. Amaya, an experienced construction professional with over 35 years of experience, will push the company into additional markets while maintaining controlled growth. "I see enormous potential in Pinkard for markets like healthcare, mission-critical, life science, and aerospace, to name a few," said Amaya. " I hope that we can branch out while still maintaining the same level of construction quality, safety, and client intimacy." Amaya said Pinkard's homegrown history and deep roots in the community are significant differentiators in this crowded construction market. "A company celebrating its 60th anniversary in a market where some of the largest general contractors in the country are competing for work means they offer something the big guys cannot," he explains. "I want to help them scale their business in a way that preserves that client experience." Amaya has served in executive-level business development roles at companies like JE Dunn Construction, Cumming Corporation, and, most recently, Select Building Group Commercial. He has been identifying opportunities and building relationships with Colorado Owners, Developers, General Contractors, and Architectural/Engineering firms for the last 25 years. Tony Burke, President of Pinkard Construction, says that now that the company is completing projects valued in the $100 million range, they are excited to bring their unique capabilities to new markets. He adds that the person representing them must be the perfect mix of Pinkard's past and future. "The diversity of [Jose's] experience is important to why we hired him," said Burke. "The fact that he started his career on the operations side and his work growing small businesses and minority contractors is an excellent fit for Pinkard's culture." Amaya will work closely with Burke and the rest of Pinkard's executive leadership team to formalize a strategy that focuses on client retention and acquisition throughout the Colorado Front Range. • Pinkard Self Performs Unique Design Features

Pinkard Self Performs Unique Design Features Pinkard Self Performs Unique Design Features 2022-03-14 Share Share On the Moorhead Recreation Center project, BRS’s impressive rope wall was thoroughly mocked up in miniature during design. During bidding, the feature was so unique only one subcontractor was willing to “throw a number at it” — to the tune of $20,000. Convinced that the number was excessive, Pinkard decided to self-perform the work. After all, we would just be running a length of rope through a series of eyelets, pulling the rope tight, and we’d be done. We set aside one person to do the work in one day. When it came time to construct the 70-foot-long art piece, the installation procedures determined during the mock-up phase didn’t work: the rope wouldn’t slide through the eyelets, and tensioning the rope to the required specifications caused stainless steel eyelet bolts to strip and shoot out at an alarming velocity entirely. Senior PM Derek Stathis: “This installation was incredibly complicated. We had different colored climbing ropes looped up and down within a steel frame, with the loops interconnecting to form a colorful waterfall pattern. But you can’t just weave it all simultaneously and tighten it. You have to put it through a top, loop it in the middle of the frame with another section of rope coming up from the bottom, then pull it to the top; then use the come-along to tighten it; clamp it off, then do another loop. You can’t pull more than one at a time because the eyelets are too small to let the rope slide freely. Our field engineer did it a little bit, and he got blisters. We did this for 1,000 feet of rope.” Ultimately, this one-person job required two carpenters two full weeks to complete, and it required several field modifications including the addition of carabiners to help the rope slide and a rope safety system to eliminate the risk of the eyelet bolts blowing out. The completed rope wall is stunning and the recreation center's crown jewel. • Pinkard Makes Sweeping Changes to Preconstruction Services Under New Leadership

Pinkard Makes Sweeping Changes to Preconstruction Services Under New Leadership Pinkard Makes Sweeping Changes to Preconstruction Services Under New Leadership 2024-02-02 Share Share Pinkard, a leading construction company in Colorado, promoted Leighton Neff to Chief Preconstruction Manager in February 2023. In his first year at the helm, Neff has made sweeping changes to better serve Pinkard clients in providing accurate pricing and constructability assessments for all projects. These changes are built on Neff’s rich and varied experience with Pinkard. Hired from CSU’s Construction Management program in 2007, Neff began as a project engineer. He has since worked up to project superintendent and manager roles. Neff joined preconstruction in 2018 as a hybrid project/preconstruction manager. In 2020, Leighton joined the Pinkard preconstruction department full-time. "My experience in the field uniquely positions me to assess the constructability of a project and provide accurate pricing, helping to avoid permitting and funding delays,” said Neff. “Overworked teams cannot perform at the level our clients expect; avoiding staff burnout is critical,” said Neff. “Our goal is to continue to provide the highest value to our clients in preconstruction services by ensuring my team has all the resources they need and is working at a capacity compatible with driving excellence.” Neff notes that he is extremely fortunate to work with great partners who truly appreciate the value Pinkard brings to their projects. “I have an excellent leadership team at my disposal who can lend their vast experience to our projects well before we turn a shovel of dirt. Their expertise makes a huge difference in outcomes,” said Neff. One of these frequent collaborators is Pinkard's Quality Control Manager, Troy Bohlender, another long-tenured Pinkard employee with over two decades of field experience. “Troy works with my whole team on assessing schedules, verifying plans and picking up on small details that are easy to miss but can cost tens of thousands of dollars in delays or rework. He’s an invaluable resource,” adds Neff. Tony Burke, President of Pinkard, notes that Neff's skills in helping clients navigate the fluctuating labor and materials markets, avoiding cost escalations, and working with architects to optimize project design without sacrificing project scope and design intent make him an invaluable member of the Pinkard team. "Over the last year Leighton has done an outstanding job as Chief Preconstruction Manager," said Burke. "His experience and expertise in the field, combined with his commitment to providing the highest level of client service, make him a natural fit for this role. The department is thriving under his leadership." In my 36 years as an owner’s representative and project manager, I can honestly say that the project was in my top five as most challenging. Pinkard made sure that the subs did what they were supposed to do and did it correctly. The final product speaks for itself - workmanship is excellent." See the Project Advising on the materials "Pinkard was really good at advising on the longevity and success of certain materials versus others, providing the context of 'we've tried that before, and the clients didn't like it after six months, or yes, that's a great product, or we see where you're going with that vision, but let's use this instead of that.' But then always balancing that with the mindfulness of our tight budget." • The Value of a Pinkard Internship

The Value of a Pinkard Internship The Value of a Pinkard Internship 2024-09-09 Share Share A college internship can be an invaluable, even life-changing, experience for young people trying to find their footing in the workplace. Some of our very best and longest serving employees came straight to Pinkard from college. So we translate our promise to “Partner, Plan and Build Better” directly into our internship program. As part of our company’s greater belief in mentorship and continuous growth for employees at all stages of their career, Pinkard has long stressed the importance of providing a solid internship program. We believe in the valuable contributions that interns can make when given the opportunity, as well as the importance of training the next generation of construction industry talent. For starters that means paying our interns for their hard work, but the most important thing is providing hands-on experience, learning opportunities, and guidance for the duration of their time with us. With summer winding to a close, we talked with this year’s class of interns about what they learned on the job and how it shaped their outlooks on Pinkard, the construction industry, and their nascent careers. “I felt like Pinkard wanted to invest in my future” To begin with, we asked our interns how they chose to work at Pinkard Construction in the first place. Juliette: I chose Pinkard for my internship because it is a highly respected and long-standing company in the construction industry, known for its excellent employee satisfaction. Pinkard showed a strong belief in my potential and offered a clear vision and pathway for my development in the field. Kane: A lot of the relationships during internships are one-sided, where the company believes the intern needs the company more than the company needs the intern. I felt like Pinkard wanted to invest in my future and cared about my personal career goals just as much as I do. As for how their actual experience compared with their expectations, the results were glowing across the board. For the interns who were new to the construction world, the experience left them with a positive view of our industry. Cassie: I didn’t have many expectations going into this summer because I had never worked in construction before... [but] ...this was a great experience and exceeded my expectations. I learned so much about the world of construction and feel like I walked away knowing I enjoy working in this industry. Juliette: My experience at Pinkard has far exceeded my expectations. The team [I worked with] has gone above and beyond, offering insights and guidance that I could not have gained in a classroom setting. The hands-on experience here has been more educational than I could have imagined. This opportunity has changed my perspective on the industry, and the unwavering support and mentorship from the team have been truly invaluable. “[My team’s] trust in me...greatly enhanced my confidence in my abilities.” When asked what surprised them about the experience, no one seemed to expect how involved Pinkard interns are in the real-world work that we do. Liam: I was surprised about the amount of resources Pinkard provides for their interns. Morgan: The most surprising aspect of my internship has been how swiftly I was able to integrate into the team and adapt to the daily processes. Cassie: I think my biggest surprise this summer was how much I got to do. From my first day I was learning the finer details of the construction process. I have been working on things that I didn’t think an intern would be doing which has been very exciting. Others noted the openness and transparency of Pinkard at all levels of our operation. Kane: I had the opportunity to network with tons of people that have been in the construction industry for 40-plus years. I had great conversations with the CFO and President of Pinkard about my future and what is takes to become successful in this industry. Juliette: My biggest surprise during the internship was how welcoming everyone was. Although I was initially apprehensive about entering the industry as a woman, the team’s openness and support exceeded my expectations. Their trust in me has not only eased my concerns but also greatly enhanced my confidence in my abilities. As for their personal highlights, the responses were wonderfully varied. Morgan: The most fascinating aspect of my internship has been learning about the closeout process. Liam: I gained lots of knowledge on trade stacking and scheduling. Kane: I loved getting firsthand experience as a preconstruction estimator and being a part of estimates involving multi-million-dollar projects that will house thousands of Coloradans. Juliette: The thing that resonates with me the most is how crucial organization is for success. I've learned that being well-organized—whether it's managing materials, coordinating subcontractors, or keeping documentation in order—plays a major role in achieving success in this industry. Cassie: One of the best things I’ve learned this summer is how much I truly enjoy the construction industry. I have met so many amazing people, both from Pinkard and on the subcontractor’s side. I walked into this summer scared that I wouldn’t be able to keep up or even really enjoy the process, but I have learned so much and been so successful. CSU student Juliette shadowed Senior Superintendent Terry Wevers this summer. “Everyone genuinely looks out for one another” When asked about their impression of Pinkard’s company culture after such a short time with us, our people-first approach stood out. Morgan: Pinkard is a company that invests in their employee’s success and growth. I can tell that everyone I’ve worked with works with respect for each other, even through misunderstanding and disagreement or conflict. Kane: Pinkard is a company that built a culture around creating powerful relationships with clients, designers, subcontractors, and their employees. Pinkard’s transparent culture benefited me by making me feel like I could communicate freely with co-workers allowing my learning capabilities to expand at an unexpected rate. Cassie: Pinkard’s culture is very inclusive and people-first. This entire summer I have felt very comfortable with bringing up any concerns or problems I may have had. I have felt very supported, like the people I am working with truly care about me and my experience, which has made this internship ten times better. As a result, multiple interns said that their time with Pinkard also raised their standards for what to expect out of an employer. Liam: Pinkard has made me more selective and company-reliable for resources in my future. Juliette: My experience at Pinkard has significantly elevated my expectations for what I want in a future company. The supportive environment and strong team dynamics have set a high standard for my career aspirations and future workplace. “Pinkard entirely changed my decision about my future career” When asked how their internships at Pinkard changed their thinking about their future careers, the responses speak for themselves. Cassie: My experience this summer with Pinkard entirely changed my decision about my future career. I wasn’t even looking into construction initially, but after this experience I have decided that the construction industry would be a great fit for me and something I definitely want to pursue. Morgan: This experience has solidified my aspiration to pursue a career as a superintendent. Kane: Pinkard solidified all my hard work in the last 5 years, working hard in the field and working toward my Construction Management degree, by confirming that working in this industry is what a want to do with my life. As for whether they would recommend a Pinkard internship to others, the answers were (at least by this point) unsurprising. Liam: YES! Cassie: Yes, I definitely would! Juliette: I would highly recommend a Pinkard internship. They invest time in teaching and mentoring, which provides a solid foundation for succeeding in this industry. Morgan: Absolutely. The internship has been a valuable learning experience, and I believe it offers great opportunities for professional growth. Being assigned to a dynamic and active job site has enhanced my learning, and the supportive environment at Pinkard fosters development and growth. Kane: I would 100% recommend a Pinkard internship. • Action Center Program Services Building | Pinkard Construction | Colorado

Pinkard provided expert construction services for The Action Center Inc on the Action Center Program Services Building project. Action Center Program Services Building Lakewood, CO, USA The Action Center Inc 12,600 Sq. Ft. Office, Public Projects Located at 8755 West 14th Avenue, in Lakewood, Colorado, the Jeffco Action Center (JAC) currently operates as a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing an immediate response to basic human needs and promoting self-sufficiency to Jefferson County's people in dire situations. With community involvement, Jeffco Action Center has served over 30,000 people a year through a food bank, clothing bank, medical/utility/rent assistance, tenant/landlord counseling, and household items to stabilize the family or individual with the continuum of emergency services to achieve self-sufficiency. The construction was phased into two separate stages. Phase one was the parking lot demolition and repaving. The second phase was a complete interior remodel of a former post office building, supplemented by two ground-up additions. The building contained a great deal of asbestos that required removal. A reframe of the roof was cost prohibitive, which required us to shore up the existing structure. We were able to arrive at a design that would enable us to maintain the existing roof structure without much effect on the interior layout. Pinkard spearheaded the drive for donations for the project, eventually gathering over $1 million in "in-kind" donations from design professionals and subcontractors sympathetic to JAC's cause. Pinkard's role as CM/GC was donated. The new facility houses a medical and dental clinic, a food, and clothing bank, and features a case management service, Santa Shop, Meals on Wheels, and tenant/landlord counseling. • Pinkard Celebrates National OSHA Safety Standdown Week 2023

Pinkard Celebrates National OSHA Safety Standdown Week 2023 Pinkard Celebrates National OSHA Safety Standdown Week 2023 2023-05-02 Share Share Pinkard is a company that takes safety seriously. For the 8th year in a row, they are participating in the OSHA Safety Standdown. This morning, Pinkard safety manager Dave Ruddy hosted a special event at the akin Golden Triangle job site, where OSHA representatives gave them valuable insights during their toolbox talk. "Over the past five years, we've had very few falls or slips, which means [our team is] doing an excellent job on this," said Ruddy. Here are a few tips Ruddy suggests that anyone could use to avoid a slip/fall incident. Use only ladders that are free of damage and use them according to the manufacturer. Inspect your walking-working surfaces for slip and trip hazards, then do what you can to correct these conditions or place a warning sign near them. When working at heights, inspect the work area to see what fall prevention methods you need to stay safe. Anytime you use fall protection equipment, inspect it for wear and tear and remove it from service if damaged. Speak about the hazards of working at heights and help each other design a safe work plan. Ruddy plans to host several weekly events, including the Krisana Apartments , Thrive affordable housing/Sun Valley infrastructure , and the Argyle Affordable Senior Living Community renovation job sites. Pinkard's safety strategy involves focusing on and eliminating the four primary hazards in construction: falling, being struck by, caught between, and electrocution. By prioritizing avoiding these significant dangers, Ruddy has discovered that crews can also prevent smaller safety issues. At Pinkard, safety is a top priority that is reinforced by upper management and embraced by all team members. Crew members are motivated by safety bonuses and work together to ensure the well-being of everyone on the team's well-being, ensuring that each person returns home safely at the end of the day. Thanks to a comprehensive suite of safety policies, among other measures, Pinkard has become a leader in the safety industry. Over the years, the company has maintained an above-average Experience Modifier Rate for its size and payroll, cementing its position as a standout contractor.
