As Commerce City continues to expand, the demand for spaces that foster health, recreation, and community connection has grown alongside it. Pinkard Construction was proud to help meet that need through the construction of the Bison Ridge Recreation Center.
Bison Ridge represents the realization of an ambitious vision: delivering five major capital projects to the community within just five years. The result is a landmark facility born from strong partnerships, innovative thinking, and a shared commitment to creating a destination centered on wellness and community engagement.
Designed by the acclaimed architectural firm Perkins + Will, the 108,000-square-foot recreation center stands as a premier community asset. The facility features a vibrant zero-entry aquatic area complete with water slides, geysers, a current channel, and lap lanes, alongside a cutting-edge gymnastics center, gymnasium, fitness studios, pickleball courts, and outdoor workout spaces that embrace Colorado’s scenery and climate. More than simply a recreation facility, Bison Ridge was thoughtfully designed to serve residents of all ages, incorporating public art, childcare services, and flexible event spaces capable of hosting everything from birthday celebrations to wedding receptions.
Developing the greenfield site required significant infrastructure work in addition to the vertical construction, all while navigating the challenges of Colorado’s demanding winter conditions. Rather than allowing the schedule to be impacted, Pinkard identified opportunities to improve efficiency and value. By utilizing tilt-up construction in place of traditional block masonry walls, the team reduced project costs by $340,000 and accelerated the schedule by six weeks.
When unforeseen issues involving soil conditions and foundation performance emerged, Pinkard responded with collaboration and innovation. The team organized a “dirt summit,” bringing together 14 industry experts to evaluate the challenge and develop the best path forward. The solution not only delivered a stronger structural system, but also generated nearly $950,000 in savings for the City.
Through the combined efforts of Pinkard Construction, Perkins + Will, and the City of Commerce City, Bison Ridge Recreation Center has become a dynamic gathering place where the community can connect, grow, and thrive together.
