- A Culture of Safety Excellence
A Culture of Safety Excellence A Culture of Safety Excellence May 10, 2024 Share Share At Pinkard Construction, safety is not just a core value, it’s the central focus of everything we do. “Safety is not just a priority, it's the priority ,” says Safety Manager David Ruddy, better known on the jobsite as Safety Dave. Dave is a passionate advocate for creating a culture of safety that extends beyond the workplace. “For me, safety comes down to one thing: your why. For most of us, that’s our loved ones. Working safe, for us and for everyone around us, means coming home healthy and whole every single day.” That’s why Safety Dave rejects the old saying “Safety First,” instead preaching the mantra, “Family first, safety always.” Dave continues: “We want to make sure that everyone who works for us knows that their safety is key to the success of our company. And it means making sure that everyone else on our jobsite—fellow workers, neighbors, passers-by and visitors to the site—do too.” Rather than simply policing safety violations, Pinkard believes that creating a positive culture of safety is the key to ensuring everyone on the job site stays safe. “We want to create a culture where safety is not just a set of rules and regulations, but an integral part of the way we work,” Dave explains. “We make sure people know their ‘why’ and then we equip them with the best possible training. We create processes and procedures that make it easy to work safely. Everyone must feel empowered to speak up if they see something that is not safe.” In addition to physical safety, Pinkard is also committed to promoting mental health awareness and providing associated resources for its employees. "We recognize that mental health is just as important as physical health. The construction industry has an alarming rate of suicide. That must change. We want our employees to know that it's important to talk about mental health and that we're here to support them." To help promote holistic wellness, Pinkard has partnered with You Turn Health to provide employees 24/7 access to supportive services for stress, anxiety, depression, substance abuse and suicidal ideation. “Almost all of us have experienced losing a loved one,” says Dave. “Sometimes there’s nothing that could have been done to prevent it, but we are committed to making sure that preventable injuries and deaths never happen on our watch.” Learn More Our Team Learn More Share This Story Share Share More News Sort By Topic Reset Pinkard Breaks Ground on Buchanan Rec Center Aquatics Expansion April 2, 2026 Learn More Pinkard Completes The Irving at Mile High Vista Affordable Apartments January 22, 2026 Learn More Pinkard and The Action Center Begin Emory School Transformation March 9, 2026 Learn More Pinkard 2025: The Year in Pictures December 30, 2025 Learn More Load More Our Approach Partner, Plan, BUILD. The award recognizes the best marketing practices and achievements in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry. The rebrand, which was completed with assistance from Bluebird Branding and BrandSavvy , two Denver-based branding agencies, involved a complete overhaul of Pinkard's logo, website, collateral, signage and vehicle graphics. The new brand identity features bold and vibrant colors of purple and pink, reflecting Pinkard's history and values. "We worked a lot internally to really define our value in the marketplace, our unique audience and to understand what goals we wanted to achieve by rebranding. - The Problem with Wood Framing and How to Solve It
The Problem with Wood Framing and How to Solve It The Problem with Wood Framing and How to Solve It December 20, 2023 Share Share This article originally appeared in the December 2023 Issue of Building Dialogue Wood framing is one of the riskiest scopes in construction. The fact that remarkably few wood framing Subcontractors can be bonded is proof of this. Even if they could, the problems that can result from poorly managed framing - including schedule and quality issues that cascade into other trades – can't really be fixed with a bonding Band-Aid. The good news is that the problem is simple, if not easy, to fix: someone must take ownership of the wood framing process. Many entities have a piece of the puzzle, leading to this lack of ownership. One glaring example is truss design. Structural Engineers (who do not have truss software) rely on general design principles to complete framing plans. Truss company's bids are based on these plans and will bid them as drawn, right or wrong. They have no incentive other than winning the job. In addition, these companies generally do not evaluate the project holistically: meeting architectural intent with MEP, structural steel integration, etc. Eventually, problematic designs are passed to the Framing Subcontractor, whose only incentive is to finish fast and collect a check. When problems are caught, redesign can take weeks. This puts the whole project on hold if it’s early enough and leads to costly rework and associated delays if construction is underway. To address these issues, a thorough preconstruction process is crucial. The first key to success is involving a General Contractor with in-depth framing knowledge and their key suppliers, especially truss fabricators, with the design team. This collaboration results in framing designs that meet architectural and structural intent, ensure constructability and seamless integration with other trades. The result is a project that can be built in budget, faster, and with simplicity that improves quality before construction starts. A critical aspect of this is cultivating relationships with vendors and holding them to project specifications. This approach ensures quality and saves owners money – and not in a nebulous “preventing future issues” way. There are myriad efficiencies that can be built into the project at this stage. Pinkard’s recent efforts on Krisana Affordable Housing created a framing design that saved the Owner over $250,000. Once the project is set up for success, experienced and attentive on-site supervision is crucial. A dedicated framing professional who leads the Framing Subcontractor and interfaces directly with the project superintendent can catch minor issues before they become major problems. This level of supervision ensures the project stays on track and all team members are held accountable for their work. Additionally, it allows for open communication between all parties involved and leads to a smoother and more efficient construction process. On-site framing supervisors must have the knowledge and authority to make quick decisions and adjustments, saving time and money. Properly implemented, these strategies can be incredibly successful. Pinkard’s recent preconstruction efforts for Boulder County Housing Authority on Willoughby Corner – a multi-phased affordable community in Lafayette with 174 units in the first phase – illustrates this well. The initial design was a unique, modern design that required complex engineering. When Pinkard took the time and worked with the design team to understand the factors driving the design decisions, we developed solutions without sacrificing the overall look of the building. Having a team who not only understands the wood framing process start to finish but also takes ownership and responsibility for its success is essential for ensuring that your wood frame project is delivered smoothly on schedule, competitively priced and is a quality build that will last you decades. - How to Avoid the Key Pitfalls in Multifamily Wood Framing
How to Avoid the Key Pitfalls in Multifamily Wood Framing How to Avoid the Key Pitfalls in Multifamily Wood Framing January 10, 2024 Share Share Wood framing is a critical multifamily construction scope requiring attention and expertise. However, it can also be risky, causing quality issues and schedule delays if not appropriately managed. This is why Pinkard Construction has launched a new framing division, Pinkard Frameworks , to address these challenges. Recently, Pinkard President Tony Burke and Pinkard Frameworks Manager Dan Harris sat down to discuss the problem with wood framing and the solutions Pinkard can offer. In this division, professionals with in-depth framing knowledge work closely with the design team and key suppliers to ensure framing designs meet architectural and structural intent, constructability, and seamless integration with other trades. Pinkard Frameworks has dedicated framing professionals who can lead subcontractors and interface with the project superintendent to catch minor issues before they become significant problems. Ultimately, taking ownership and responsibility for the wood framing process is the key to success in commercial multifamily construction. Q: Wood framing is said to be one of the riskiest scopes in commercial construction. What makes it so risky? Tony Burke: Wood framing is a unique process that requires a lot of attention and expertise. If not managed properly, it can cause problems that cascade into other trades, leading to quality issues and schedule delays. This is what makes our new framing division so important; our clients, developer partners, design professionals and fellow general contractors can benefit from partnering with such a dedicated and specialized team. Dan Harris: Another potential issue is that very few wood framing subcontractors can be bonded. This is proof that the process is risky and requires someone to take ownership. That is why I am so happy to be a part of this new division, Pinkard Frameworks. Q: What is the solution to these problems? Tony Burke: The solution is to take ownership of the wood framing process. This means involving a general contractor with in-depth framing knowledge and their key suppliers, especially truss fabricators, with the design team. This collaboration results in framing designs that meet architectural and structural intent, ensure constructability, and seamless integration with other trades. Dan Harris: A critical aspect of this is cultivating relationships with vendors and holding them to project specifications. This approach ensures quality and saves owners money. Q: Can you give an example of how this approach has worked in the past? Tony Burke: Pinkard’s recent efforts on Krisana Affordable Housing created a framing design that saved the owner over $250,000. Dan Harris: Another example is Pinkard’s recent preconstruction efforts for Boulder County Housing Authority’s project, Willoughby Corner. The initial design was a unique, modern design that required complex engineering. We took the time to work with the design team to understand the factors driving the design decisions. We developed more economical solutions without sacrificing the overall look of the building. Q: What role does on-site supervision play in ensuring successful wood framing? Dan Harris: Experienced and attentive on-site supervision is crucial. A dedicated framing professional who leads the Framing Subcontractor and interfaces directly with the project superintendent can catch minor issues before they become major problems. This level of supervision ensures the project stays on track and all team members are held accountable for their work. Tony Burke: On-site framing supervisors must have the knowledge and authority to make quick decisions and adjustments, saving time and money. Q: In summary, what is the key to success in wood framing? Tony Burke: Having a team who not only understands the wood framing process start to finish but also takes ownership and responsibility for its success is essential for ensuring that your wood frame project is delivered smoothly on schedule, competitively priced and is a quality build that will last you decades. Q: Finally, can you tell us more about Pinkard Frameworks? Tony Burke: It’s a wood framing division of Pinkard Construction that will serve as a trade partner to developers and general contractors along the Colorado front range. We are thrilled to have Dan as our new Wood Frame Manager. His 40 years of experience have really let this division hit the ground running. Dan Harris: We will continue to self-perform wood framing for Pinkard projects, but other projects will be supported by Pinkard’s Self-Performance Department, including our team of superintendents, carpenters and foremen. AGC of Colorado partnered with Youturn Health to support their members and families in navigating substance use and mental health concerns. AGC found that Youturn Health provides easy access to confidential and private support at any stage of an individual's recovery journey. Youturn Health is a confidential virtual program that bridges the gap between inaction and seeking clinical help by making support accessible to users grappling with any mental or behavioral health condition, including but not limited to stress, anxiety, depression, substance use, grief, or suicidal ideation, wherever they are in their journey. Youturn Health provides accessible, end-to-end support for individuals and their families, with tools including peer coaching, resources, and an online learning library. The event featured a guest speaker from YouTurn who delivered a powerful message about the importance of mental health and suicide prevention. The speaker emphasized the need for individuals to seek help and support when they are struggling with mental health issues. One employee who participated in the event described it as "a great way to bring awareness to mental health and suicide prevention in a non-judgmental and fun way. It was nice to see the company take an active role in the well-being of its employees." Pinkard Construction plans to continue its partnership with YouTurn and hopes to host similar events in the future. The company recognizes that mental health is a critical issue that affects many individuals, and it is committed to providing resources and support to its employees. In the words of Burke, "We want our employees to know that they are not alone, and we are here to help. We hope that our partnership with YouTurn and events like this cornhole tournament will make a positive difference in the lives of our staff."
