- The Value of a Pinkard Internship
The Value of a Pinkard Internship The Value of a Pinkard Internship 2024-09-09 Share Share A college internship can be an invaluable, even life-changing, experience for young people trying to find their footing in the workplace. Some of our very best and longest serving employees came straight to Pinkard from college. So we translate our promise to “Partner, Plan and Build Better” directly into our internship program. As part of our company’s greater belief in mentorship and continuous growth for employees at all stages of their career, Pinkard has long stressed the importance of providing a solid internship program. We believe in the valuable contributions that interns can make when given the opportunity, as well as the importance of training the next generation of construction industry talent. For starters that means paying our interns for their hard work, but the most important thing is providing hands-on experience, learning opportunities, and guidance for the duration of their time with us. With summer winding to a close, we talked with this year’s class of interns about what they learned on the job and how it shaped their outlooks on Pinkard, the construction industry, and their nascent careers. “I felt like Pinkard wanted to invest in my future” To begin with, we asked our interns how they chose to work at Pinkard Construction in the first place. Juliette: I chose Pinkard for my internship because it is a highly respected and long-standing company in the construction industry, known for its excellent employee satisfaction. Pinkard showed a strong belief in my potential and offered a clear vision and pathway for my development in the field. Kane: A lot of the relationships during internships are one-sided, where the company believes the intern needs the company more than the company needs the intern. I felt like Pinkard wanted to invest in my future and cared about my personal career goals just as much as I do. As for how their actual experience compared with their expectations, the results were glowing across the board. For the interns who were new to the construction world, the experience left them with a positive view of our industry. Cassie: I didn’t have many expectations going into this summer because I had never worked in construction before... [but] ...this was a great experience and exceeded my expectations. I learned so much about the world of construction and feel like I walked away knowing I enjoy working in this industry. Juliette: My experience at Pinkard has far exceeded my expectations. The team [I worked with] has gone above and beyond, offering insights and guidance that I could not have gained in a classroom setting. The hands-on experience here has been more educational than I could have imagined. This opportunity has changed my perspective on the industry, and the unwavering support and mentorship from the team have been truly invaluable. “[My team’s] trust in me...greatly enhanced my confidence in my abilities.” When asked what surprised them about the experience, no one seemed to expect how involved Pinkard interns are in the real-world work that we do. Liam: I was surprised about the amount of resources Pinkard provides for their interns. Morgan: The most surprising aspect of my internship has been how swiftly I was able to integrate into the team and adapt to the daily processes. Cassie: I think my biggest surprise this summer was how much I got to do. From my first day I was learning the finer details of the construction process. I have been working on things that I didn’t think an intern would be doing which has been very exciting. Others noted the openness and transparency of Pinkard at all levels of our operation. Kane: I had the opportunity to network with tons of people that have been in the construction industry for 40-plus years. I had great conversations with the CFO and President of Pinkard about my future and what is takes to become successful in this industry. Juliette: My biggest surprise during the internship was how welcoming everyone was. Although I was initially apprehensive about entering the industry as a woman, the team’s openness and support exceeded my expectations. Their trust in me has not only eased my concerns but also greatly enhanced my confidence in my abilities. As for their personal highlights, the responses were wonderfully varied. Morgan: The most fascinating aspect of my internship has been learning about the closeout process. Liam: I gained lots of knowledge on trade stacking and scheduling. Kane: I loved getting firsthand experience as a preconstruction estimator and being a part of estimates involving multi-million-dollar projects that will house thousands of Coloradans. Juliette: The thing that resonates with me the most is how crucial organization is for success. I've learned that being well-organized—whether it's managing materials, coordinating subcontractors, or keeping documentation in order—plays a major role in achieving success in this industry. Cassie: One of the best things I’ve learned this summer is how much I truly enjoy the construction industry. I have met so many amazing people, both from Pinkard and on the subcontractor’s side. I walked into this summer scared that I wouldn’t be able to keep up or even really enjoy the process, but I have learned so much and been so successful. CSU student Juliette shadowed Senior Superintendent Terry Wevers this summer. “Everyone genuinely looks out for one another” When asked about their impression of Pinkard’s company culture after such a short time with us, our people-first approach stood out. Morgan: Pinkard is a company that invests in their employee’s success and growth. I can tell that everyone I’ve worked with works with respect for each other, even through misunderstanding and disagreement or conflict. Kane: Pinkard is a company that built a culture around creating powerful relationships with clients, designers, subcontractors, and their employees. Pinkard’s transparent culture benefited me by making me feel like I could communicate freely with co-workers allowing my learning capabilities to expand at an unexpected rate. Cassie: Pinkard’s culture is very inclusive and people-first. This entire summer I have felt very comfortable with bringing up any concerns or problems I may have had. I have felt very supported, like the people I am working with truly care about me and my experience, which has made this internship ten times better. As a result, multiple interns said that their time with Pinkard also raised their standards for what to expect out of an employer. Liam: Pinkard has made me more selective and company-reliable for resources in my future. Juliette: My experience at Pinkard has significantly elevated my expectations for what I want in a future company. The supportive environment and strong team dynamics have set a high standard for my career aspirations and future workplace. “Pinkard entirely changed my decision about my future career” When asked how their internships at Pinkard changed their thinking about their future careers, the responses speak for themselves. Cassie: My experience this summer with Pinkard entirely changed my decision about my future career. I wasn’t even looking into construction initially, but after this experience I have decided that the construction industry would be a great fit for me and something I definitely want to pursue. Morgan: This experience has solidified my aspiration to pursue a career as a superintendent. Kane: Pinkard solidified all my hard work in the last 5 years, working hard in the field and working toward my Construction Management degree, by confirming that working in this industry is what a want to do with my life. As for whether they would recommend a Pinkard internship to others, the answers were (at least by this point) unsurprising. Liam: YES! Cassie: Yes, I definitely would! Juliette: I would highly recommend a Pinkard internship. They invest time in teaching and mentoring, which provides a solid foundation for succeeding in this industry. Morgan: Absolutely. The internship has been a valuable learning experience, and I believe it offers great opportunities for professional growth. Being assigned to a dynamic and active job site has enhanced my learning, and the supportive environment at Pinkard fosters development and growth. Kane: I would 100% recommend a Pinkard internship. - Action Center Program Services Building | Pinkard Construction | Colorado
Pinkard provided expert construction services for The Action Center Inc on the Action Center Program Services Building project. Action Center Program Services Building Lakewood, CO, USA The Action Center Inc 12,600 Sq. Ft. Office, Public Projects Located at 8755 West 14th Avenue, in Lakewood, Colorado, the Jeffco Action Center (JAC) currently operates as a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing an immediate response to basic human needs and promoting self-sufficiency to Jefferson County's people in dire situations. With community involvement, Jeffco Action Center has served over 30,000 people a year through a food bank, clothing bank, medical/utility/rent assistance, tenant/landlord counseling, and household items to stabilize the family or individual with the continuum of emergency services to achieve self-sufficiency. The construction was phased into two separate stages. Phase one was the parking lot demolition and repaving. The second phase was a complete interior remodel of a former post office building, supplemented by two ground-up additions. The building contained a great deal of asbestos that required removal. A reframe of the roof was cost prohibitive, which required us to shore up the existing structure. We were able to arrive at a design that would enable us to maintain the existing roof structure without much effect on the interior layout. Pinkard spearheaded the drive for donations for the project, eventually gathering over $1 million in "in-kind" donations from design professionals and subcontractors sympathetic to JAC's cause. Pinkard's role as CM/GC was donated. The new facility houses a medical and dental clinic, a food, and clothing bank, and features a case management service, Santa Shop, Meals on Wheels, and tenant/landlord counseling. - Pinkard Celebrates National OSHA Safety Standdown Week 2023
Pinkard Celebrates National OSHA Safety Standdown Week 2023 Pinkard Celebrates National OSHA Safety Standdown Week 2023 2023-05-02 Share Share Pinkard is a company that takes safety seriously. For the 8th year in a row, they are participating in the OSHA Safety Standdown. This morning, Pinkard safety manager Dave Ruddy hosted a special event at the akin Golden Triangle job site, where OSHA representatives gave them valuable insights during their toolbox talk. "Over the past five years, we've had very few falls or slips, which means [our team is] doing an excellent job on this," said Ruddy. Here are a few tips Ruddy suggests that anyone could use to avoid a slip/fall incident. Use only ladders that are free of damage and use them according to the manufacturer. Inspect your walking-working surfaces for slip and trip hazards, then do what you can to correct these conditions or place a warning sign near them. When working at heights, inspect the work area to see what fall prevention methods you need to stay safe. Anytime you use fall protection equipment, inspect it for wear and tear and remove it from service if damaged. Speak about the hazards of working at heights and help each other design a safe work plan. Ruddy plans to host several weekly events, including the Krisana Apartments , Thrive affordable housing/Sun Valley infrastructure , and the Argyle Affordable Senior Living Community renovation job sites. Pinkard's safety strategy involves focusing on and eliminating the four primary hazards in construction: falling, being struck by, caught between, and electrocution. By prioritizing avoiding these significant dangers, Ruddy has discovered that crews can also prevent smaller safety issues. At Pinkard, safety is a top priority that is reinforced by upper management and embraced by all team members. Crew members are motivated by safety bonuses and work together to ensure the well-being of everyone on the team's well-being, ensuring that each person returns home safely at the end of the day. Thanks to a comprehensive suite of safety policies, among other measures, Pinkard has become a leader in the safety industry. Over the years, the company has maintained an above-average Experience Modifier Rate for its size and payroll, cementing its position as a standout contractor. - Project Rewind: Keeping Costs Down So Astroscale Can Zap Space Trash in Style
Project Rewind: Keeping Costs Down So Astroscale Can Zap Space Trash in Style Project Rewind: Keeping Costs Down So Astroscale Can Zap Space Trash in Style 2024-06-06 Share Share There’s a lot of talk about creating a more sustainable future here on this planet, but less about doing so beyond the earth’s inner atmosphere. Enter Astroscale, which since 2013 has been working to advance safe and sustainable growth in outer space by extending the life of orbiting satellites and clearing the skies of hazardous space debris. Founded and headquartered in Japan, Astroscale chose Denver for its U.S. headquarters. Located in South Denver, off Broadway and Evans, the company found its new office in the form of a 100-year-old building—once home to a metal foundry—featuring heavy timbers, a brick envelope, huge windows, glass block, and open spaces. The design intent of the 13,500 square foot renovation was to complement the existing structure and its history with an innovative office space inspired by traditional Japanese design and the science fiction of Star Wars and Star Trek . After coming in second in the bidding stage, Pinkard was hired by Astroscale in the Spring of 2022 to save the renovation when the originally-hired contractor fell drastically behind in preconstruction. To quickly get up to speed, Pinkard worked closely and diligently with Astroscale and NeoEra Architecture to analyze the previous contractor’s preconstruction efforts and provide effective value engineering to get the design into budget. “Pinkard spent a lot of time in preconstruction trying to match program and budget and still have reputable, ethical, trustworthy subcontractors,” says Astroscale senior vice president Becky Yoder. “I cannot say enough good things about the Pinkard team, how well they work together, and how transparent they were.” One of Pinkard’s key goals was through design optimization and executing the project in a way that kept costs under a critical threshold, preventing Astroscale from having to conduct hundreds of thousands of extra flood gate work that would have been required by the city if the remodel exceeded the value of the building. Of course, none of Pinkard’s savvy budgeting meant compromising on quality. “There were things that Pinkard wouldn't accept from the mill worker, so they had to go back and refabricate,” remembers NeoEra principal architect Emily Adams. “These weren't always the fastest solutions, but they were definitely the best solutions. I really appreciated that.” As to whether those cost-saving measures came at the expense of the interior’s stunning, sci-fi-inspired design, the pictures speak for themselves. “We came in on time and on budget,” says Becky Yoder. “This is my third building to finish out in the aerospace industry, and this was by far the best experience I've had. And considering the challenges with this old building, I would highly recommend Pinkard.” Learn More Adaptive Reuse Construction Learn More Office Renovations and New Construction See Projects Renovations and Additions See Projects Share This Story Share Share More News Sort By Topic Reset Willoughby Corner: BCHA's Landmark Affordable Housing Development 2025-07-15 Learn More Pinkard Completes Bay Aquatic Park On Time and Under Budget 2025-07-07 Learn More Project Rewind: Prioritizing the Needs of 275 Seniors at Clermont Park 2025-07-09 Learn More Pinkard Tops Out Phase III of The Edge 2025-06-25 Learn More Load More Our Approach Partner, Plan, BUILD. Pinkard Guest Lecturers Kick Off Inaugural DU Affordable Housing Program Pinkard Guest Lecturers Kick Off Inaugural DU Affordable Housing Program 2025-04-30 Share Share Members of Pinkard Construction’s operations and preconstruction departments recently served as guest lecturers at the University of Denver, presenting their perspectives for the Design, Build, and Operate module of DU’s Executive Certificate in Affordable Housing program. Chief Preconstruction Manager Leighton Neff and Construction Manager Joe Revielle, both veteran affordable housing specialists, shared their experiences to a diverse class of 25 professionals currently working in the affordable housing sector. The student group was comprised of real estate professionals, developers, planners, policy makers, housing advocates, attorneys, civic leaders, property managers, architects, and lenders looking to expand their understanding of the complexities of the affordable housing world. Currently in its inaugural year, DU’s nine-month certification program provides these participants with a focused and fast-tracked pathway to learn the complexities of affordable housing development and the practical skills necessary to work in this specialized sector. To help meet these needs, Revielle and Neff focused their lecture on lessons learned from their recent experiences building two projects for Boulder County Housing Authority. Amanda Guthrie, Boulder County Housing Authority’s director of housing operations, who is also a DU faculty member, selected Revielle and Neff because of their work together on BCHA’s The Spoke on Coffman and the Willoughby Corner Neighborhood projects. The Spoke was a $32 million affordable development in Longmont constructed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Completed this past Deceber, the $83 million Willoughby development finished in budget and ahead of schedule despite a complex road and infrastructure package that saw continual city-initiated scope increases. Revielle and Neff also covered a variety of other topics including the importance of team building, approaches to providing best value through the preconstruction process, overcoming an unpredictable labor and materials market, and the differences between market-rate and affordable housing developments. This session represented module six of the University of Denver’s seven-phased Executive Certificate in Affordable Housing program, scheduled to finish in June 2025. The program is sponsored by the Franklin L. Burns School of Real Estate & Construction Management and the Rocky Mountain Land Use Institute. Applications for the next term, beginning September 2025, are currently being accepted until May 30. Apply here . Pinkard Starts Thrive with 0% Budget Variance Pinkard Starts Thrive with 0% Budget Variance 2021-01-28 Share Share Pinkard Construction and Shopworks Architecture have completed preconstruction services on Denver Housing Authority’s (DHA) $42 million Thrive affordable housing complex. “Working with the precon team at Pinkard was a great experience – their knowledge and approach made for a truly collaborative process that helped add real value to the project,” said Kyle Mead, Project Manager at Shopworks Architecture. Working closely with the design team, Pinkard helped guide the budget to a 0% variance between design development documents and the GMP. With this phase complete, it is expected that construction will begin in late February. “With this zero percent variance, DHA was able to incorporate add-alternates to enhance Thrive’s value to future tenants and DHA,” said Leighton Neff, Senior Preconstruction Manager for Pinkard. “During preconstruction, Pinkard collaborated closely with DHA, the Shopworks team and our chosen MEP/fire and earthworks design-assist partners to refine the scope and pricing from the design development phase through GMP.” A part of DHA’s Sun Valley redevelopment plan, Thrive will be a ground-up, 7-story, mixed-income development with a mix of two-story townhomes and 1 – 5-bedroom multi-family units, totaling 135 units. Once this project is complete, it will mark Pinkard’s 101st multi-family project, with more than 50 of those being HUD-funded projects. - Pinkard Tops Out at Jacoby Meadows
Pinkard Tops Out at Jacoby Meadows Pinkard Tops Out at Jacoby Meadows 2025-03-24 Share Share Pinkard Construction has topped out Windsor Housing Authority’s (WHA) Jacoby Meadows Senior Affordable Apartments. Developed in partnership with the Loveland Housing Authority (LHA) and WORKSHOP8 Architecture, the two-phased project initially creates 62 age-restricted units serving low to moderate income seniors. The second phase, which is still seeking funding, will add an additional 61 units. Despite several early challenging unforeseen conditions and numerous inclement weather days the project is still on time and in budget, thanks in part to some creative construction brainstorming and a state-of-the-art approach to wood framing. During the sewer tie-in phase, construction crews encountered an unexpected “bedrock-like layer” that stopped just short of requiring blasting to penetrate. During the actual sewer tie-ins, unexpected groundwater became an additional concern, requiring an extended dewatering phase. Fortunately, Pinkard Frameworks — Pinkard's in-house wood framing division — provided exceptional construction efficiencies to keep the project on track. Tasked with providing more than 63,000 sf of framing, the Frameworks team began an exhaustive constructability and quality control effort during preconstruction, thoroughly vetting the framing design for layout, detailing, fit and finish. Procurement and site logistics were also high priorities, resulting in the team making expeditious progress from the start of construction and completing most of the framing in less than two months, even with 13 weather days. “I can’t say enough about Frameworks’ contribution to this construction effort,” says Terry Wevers, Pinkard’s senior superintendent. “They are going above and beyond to provide exceptional framing services in a remarkably short time frame. Considering our early challenges, we are delighted to be on time and in budget, and we’re expecting to make up even more time now that we’re dried in.” Eric Hull, Director of Real Estate Development for Loveland Housing Authority, commented: “LHA and WHA are thrilled with the construction progress to date, and Pinkard Construction is once again demonstrating why they have become such a trusted general contractor for us. Their dedication, expertise, and innovative construction techniques have the project on schedule and within budget despite some unforeseen challenges in the first few months of construction. We are looking forward to the grand opening of Jacoby Meadows later this year and for the opportunity to bring these much-needed new, affordable, age-restricted housing units to the Windsor community.” Pinkard is now moving forward with roofing, MEP rough-ins, and window quality control. Construction is expected to complete on time in September. * Windsor Housing Authority (WHA) is a public agency that helps people who meet income and other eligibility guidelines, secure affordable, safe and quality housing in the town of Windsor. WHA currently offers two affordable housing developments: Windsor Meadows, an 80-unit apartment complex and Century III Apartments, a 62-unit community for individuals 62 and over and those with disabilities. In addition to creating affordable housing opportunities for low- and moderate-income residents of Loveland, the Loveland Housing Authority (LHA) mentors and helps other housing authorities as part of their mission to provide and maintain obtainable housing. With infinite customization options, it is East West Partners' most luxurious condominium development to date. "The Park" has a one story parking garage, brick veneer skin, composite metal paneling, and residential window wall. Fan coil units were housed within soffits to increase useable space. Customization options included: custom German plumbing fixtures, wood floors from Malaysia, Greek and Italian tile, showers equipped with multiple shower heads, televisions and sound systems, custom, glass walled jacuzzis. Pinkard worked directly with all 16 unit owners to coordinate over $1.2 million in customizations. Coordination included all pricing, procurement and installation.
