Pinkard provided the owner of Christian Living Communities with close collaboration during construction to accommodate the owner’s changing design needs. In-construction changes included additional millwork, carpet revisions, additional lighting/reconfigured lighting, and revised cabinetry. These changes totaled more than $150,000 and included a one-week schedule extension to accommodate the work. Ft., 175 Units Multi-Family Housing, Higher Education, State of Colorado Contract, Ground Up, Occupied Colorado State University's first new residence hall since 1967 began in the Spring of 2003 and is a 118,000 gross sf, 535-bed facility. The project is the first phase of a housing master plan that will bring all of CSU's dorms up to date and help the university solve its recent on-campus housing crunch. The 175 suites are comprised of one, two, or three-person suites, with one restroom in each suite. The four-story structure includes common spaces and support spaces on the lower and basement levels for laundry, vending, common gathering areas, and administrative spaces. The lower level is designed as a garden level with natural light. Landscaping takes up approximately 45% of the site and includes picnic areas, recreational areas, intimate and informal areas, and circulation, with vehicle parking for 260 and bicycle parking for 400. Pinkard Hosts Second Annual Cornhole Tournament Supporting Mental Health Pinkard Hosts Second Annual Cornhole Tournament Supporting Mental Health September 17, 2024 Share Share For the second year in a row, Pinkard Construction hosted a cornhole tournament for its employees last Friday. While there was plenty of fun and games to be had, not to mention a dessert food truck, the day was also about acknowledging a serious topic: mental health. Capping off Construction Suicide Prevention Week—which Safety Manager Dave Ruddy spoke about with CBS News earlier in the week—the day’s pre-tournament festivities included a talk by Duke Rumley, executive director of Sober AF Entertainment (S.A.F.E.), a non-profit that provides resources and creates sober spaces at live events to combat the idea that you can’t have fun without drugs and alcohol. Rumley’s talk, which also included a demonstration of the life-saving anti-opioid spray NARCAN, was about identifying what addiction looks like, and how to help somebody who’s struggling with it. Explaining the connection between substance abuse and mental health, he said: “One of the core issues with addiction is that you are prey to misery and depression. When you get defeated, and you feel like there is no way out, a lot of people choose suicide. We're here today to tell people that there are lots of different resources that Pinkard offers, from Youturn Health to having a company culture that’s willing to talk about it, there’s a safe place to come and get help.” After a brief Q&A with Rumley, Dave Ruddy got on the mic to remind everyone to talk to each other, get to k now each other, and check in with each other. “We’re a family here,” he said. “We’ve got to watch each other’s backs.” And with that, the epic sandbag showdown commenced on the cornhole field. Rescuing a Renovation: Sloan's Lake Rehabilitation Center Rescuing a Renovation: Sloan's Lake Rehabilitation Center August 1, 2023 Share Share The Sloan’s Lake Care and Rehabilitation Center project at Sloan’s Lake Medical Center in Denver was intended to be a dramatic upgrade to allow for enhanced patient care within a new, state-of-the-art facility. The scope of work in the six-story building included a complete gut and renovation of the fifth and sixth floors into a skilled nursing facility. Work also included improvements to the 6,800-sf ground floor with a new full-commercial kitchen to service the fifth and sixth floors, physical therapy space, reception, and office areas. The project also included minimal demo and finish work for a 1,000-sf laundry facility to service laundry from the first, fifth, and sixth-floor operations. The project was on a fast-tracked August 2011 to March 2012 schedule to allow Sloan’s Lake to take advantage of some lease-related cost savings. A California-based general contractor was hired to perform the work but was terminated in March 2012 due to insufficient progress . Insufficient progress meant the GC was near the end of the schedule but had not yet completed demolition. Hoping to “save the day,” owner Ensign Facility Services brought Pinkard Construction Company on board in April 2012. With the understanding that no preconstruction would be necessary, a quick demo completion and prompt build-out commencement would allow the project to be completed neat and tidy in mid-June 2012. As Pinkard began discovery in April, unsettling signs of asbestos were seen in areas that were supposed to be clean. Fearing the worst, Pinkard enlisted an independent consultant to advise on the work area's alleged “all clean” condition. After careful assessment by the consultant, the site was declared a “major spill” of asbestos contamination. The site was sealed, the existing tenant immediately vacated the entire 4th floor, and the fifth and sixth floors were put under full containment. This second abatement effort was almost double the original cost and scope due to the spill and resultant contamination of duct and elevator shafts, plenum spaces, etc. It also took nearly two additional months to complete. While abatement was underway and demolition at a standstill, an examination of the design documents revealed that the design, which was produced by an out-of-state architect, was far from complete, even to the point of not providing for mechanical, electrical and plumbing drawings. Pinkard worked with Ensign to constantly monitor this deficient situation, and the design and previously non-existent MEP drawings slowly developed. Pinkard also worked with Ensign and the out-of-state architect to establish a mid-May due date for construction documents that could be submitted for permit and let out for bidding. Acceptable construction documents were received June 22, and associated permits were September 4 following many rounds of revisions. Pinkard and Ensign launched an extensive preconstruction effort over the summer without a completed design or permit-able drawings. Pinkard provided comprehensive budgeting, estimating and value engineering services to establish a GMP. Despite significant favorable progress, the team decided in July it would be in the project’s best interest to hire local architect Intergroup to perform construction administration. With so much time lost due to the additional abatement and getting the design up to speed, when Pinkard was finally allowed back on-site, double-shift, six-day work weeks were implemented. Beginning Sept 4, the fourth floor ceilings were rebuilt, and the entire floor was repainted, with turnover for occupancy October 1. During this time fifth-floor waste piping for the new fifth floor bathrooms was roughed-in. First floor demolition and construction was a very sensitive issue because Pinkard was working directly beneath a fully occupied, second-floor intensive care unit. Any systems shutdown would impact intensive care operations. This situation required Pinkard and Intergroup to carefully examine as-built drawings, and open and examine existing shafts, mainline stacks, and medical-gas stacks to prevent inadvertent shut downs to intensive care above. Pinkard also collaborated closely with Xcel to avoid a shutdown of natural gas during a gas meter upsizing. Pinkard continued to make expeditious progress with a strong construction plan, an involved construction administrator in Intergroup Architects, and a committed owner. Construction ran from September 4 to December 17, 2012. The great finish we enjoyed is a credit to Ensign, Pinkard, and Intergroup Architects’ strong commitment to team-building...it saved this project. Sloan’s Lake and Ensign are very proud of what this team was able to accomplish, and this facility is already making a difference in our patients’ lives.” The completed facility contains 42 private suites with floor-to-ceiling windows for stunning city and mountain views in all rooms; state-of-the-art rehabilitation gyms with AlterG antigravity body-weight treadmills and Pilates Reformer. Sunny Vista Skilled Nursing Colorado Springs, CO, USA Sunny Vista Living Center 89,000 Sq. Ft., 116 Units Senior Living, Healthcare, Multi-Family Housing, Skilled Nursing, Wood Framed, Ground Up Sunny Vista Skilled Nursing Facility is a 2-story, 116-room senior living facility located across the street from the main Sunny Vista Living Center campus. The new 89,000 sf facility, which is adjacent to a large community park in central Colorado Springs, offers private rooms for short-term rehabilitation or long-term custodial care. The main level features a dramatic two-story living room trimmed with ornate hand railings and a large fireplace. Other amenities include living rooms, communal dining, a therapy room and gym, chapel, salon, conference room, three elevated outdoor patios, a multi-purpose room, 270-gallon aquarium, and aviary. The garden-level basement houses a commercial kitchen, dietary/nurse/social worker offices, employee lounge/locker room, mechanical/electrical rooms, and oxygen storage space. The laundry room features an Aquawing Ozone laundry system, which uses a state-of-the-art ozone cleaning process that reduces water and energy consumption. Sunny Vista's structure consists of metal-stud framing with a Hambro floor system, manufactured stone and stucco skin, concrete tile and standing seam metal roof. An underground garage with a structural concrete lid sits under one of the unit wings. The mechanical system uses heat pumps for heating and cooling. Pinkard Names New Chief Business Development Officer Pinkard Names New Chief Business Development Officer June 3, 2022 Share Share Pinkard Construction names Jose Amaya as its New Chief Business Development Officer. Amaya, an experienced construction professional with over 35 years of experience, will push the company into additional markets while maintaining controlled growth. "I see enormous potential in Pinkard for markets like healthcare, mission-critical, life science, and aerospace, to name a few," said Amaya. " I hope that we can branch out while still maintaining the same level of construction quality, safety, and client intimacy." Amaya said Pinkard's homegrown history and deep roots in the community are significant differentiators in this crowded construction market. "A company celebrating its 60th anniversary in a market where some of the largest general contractors in the country are competing for work means they offer something the big guys cannot," he explains. "I want to help them scale their business in a way that preserves that client experience." Amaya has served in executive-level business development roles at companies like JE Dunn Construction, Cumming Corporation, and, most recently, Select Building Group Commercial. Pinkard provided expert construction services for STRIDE on the North Aurora Family Health Services Building project. North Aurora Family Health Services Building Arvada, Colorado, USA STRIDE 8,070 Sq. Ft. Healthcare, Pharmacy, Clinic, Renovation, Occupied Pinkard Construction, in a design-build relationship with MOA Architecture and Metro Community Provider Network (MCPN), completed the North Aurora Family Health Services renovation 45 days ahead of schedule and $80,000 under budget. Scope of work on the two-phased, 10,000 sf project included renovation and reconfiguration of a fully operational pharmacy, and transformation of existing offices into exam and procedure rooms. The design-build team structure contributed greatly to the project’s success, allowing MCPN, MOA, and Pinkard time to reevaluate MCPN’s needs and program. Design and programming charrettes produced more efficient layouts resulting in expanded pharmacy space, two additional procedure rooms, a shorter schedule, and budget savings during buyout. Pinkard’s management of the occupied pharmacy renovation was another key to the project’s success. With Pinkard’s implementation of a rolling shelving system, pharmacy staff was able to quickly transport and securely store pharmaceuticals during the long weekend of pharmacy renovation. Pinkard provided expert construction services for Denver Zoological Foundation on the Denver Zoo Tropical Discovery project. Denver Zoo Tropical Discovery Denver, Colorado, USA Denver Zoological Foundation 41,000 Sq. Ft. Public Projects, Recreation Tropical Discovery is a conservatory-type building that provides a real-life rainforest environment in a 1.5-acre tropical ecosystem. The Denver Zoo's exhibit and education center is home to 140 species of plants, 123 species of fish, and over 1200 animals representing over 200 species such as mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. An offshore coral reef, tropical marshes, temple ruins, cypress, and mangrove swamps have been created throughout the complex. With over 13 pools forming the pathway around the exhibit, 24 glass-fronted tanks, 3 waterfalls, and a jungle river, Pinkard faced very complex waterproofing challenges in installing four different waterproofing systems specified in the architect's construction documents. Intricate life support systems were installed that precisely regulate each exhibit environment for the vast array of both plant and animal species requiring maintenance of proper temperatures. The building is topped with two pyramid-shaped skylights providing natural light for almost 3/4 of the building. One of the skylights stands 45 feet above the ground. A temple inside nearly reaches the pyramid's peak. Although there are 22,000 square feet of display area, the total square footage, including service areas and holding pens, is nearly 41,000. The exterior involved Pinkard's execution of extensive architectural cast-in-place concrete work. With the construction of Tropical Discovery, the Denver Zoo is one of the few zoos in the country that has created natural habitats and biological ecosystems that blend the best of biology and botany. It is a fascinating and unique opportunity for visitors to experience the immense diversity of life in the tropics and to gain a greater appreciation for the fragile nature of this important ecosystem. Eric comes to Pinkard following a stellar field management career as a superintendent and senior superintendent for two large national construction companies who maintained a significant Denver-area presence. “We are ecstatic to add Eric’s great construction background and strong leadership skills to our field management team,” says Tom Alford, Pinkard’s chief operating officer. “Eric is a strong field performer with a proven history fostering relationships with subcontractors, clients, and fellow team members. He will be an important influence on our ability to move into new job markets and excel in providing quality, safety, and strong budget and schedule control to future projects.” With a bachelor’s degree in business from Miami (Ohio) University, Eric began his 25+-year career as a tract-home framer in Nebraska. Pinkard in the News: Dave Ruddy Talks to CBS About Construction Suicide Prevention Week Pinkard in the News: Dave Ruddy Talks to CBS About Construction Suicide Prevention Week September 12, 2024 Share Share This week is National Suicide Prevention Week, an annual observance focused on reducing suicide in our communities through spreading awareness of the suicide epidemic and sharing knowledge of the suicide warning signs to look out for in our friends, family and coworkers. Coinciding with the national campaign, our industry also observes Construction Suicide Prevention Week , aimed at “raising awareness about the unique challenges workers face in construction, how it can lead to suicide, and what we can do to prevent it.” Earlier this week, Pinkard Field Safety Manager Dave Ruddy was interviewed by CBS News Colorado about the efforts of Pinkard and other members of the Association of General Contractors in addressing the mental health crisis plaguing jobsites across America.
